Atalanta made history: they won their first international title by beating Leverkusen in the UEFA Europa League final.
Leverkusen, totally outclassed, fell just short of a 'treble' that would have capped an equally historic season.
Atalanta were crowned Europa League champions on Wednesday in a magical night, in the first European final of their history, destroying a historic Bayer Leverkusen side in Dublin (3-0) and with Nigerian Ademola Lookman as the absolute hero, scoring a spectacular hat-trick to glorify the Greek goddess incarnated in a small soccer team.
Leverkusen had gone 51 games in a row without defeat. It was a feeling of absolute superiority that Xabi Alonso's team emanated throughout the season. It was a historic treble for the Aspirin side, who were deserved favorites in Dublin after an unforgettable year in which they won a Bundesliga -the first in their history- to remember.
But Atalanta, a team from the small town of Bergamo, just 60 kilometers from Milan in northern Italy, became the irreducible little Gallic village of Asterix and Obelix, embodied by Gasperini and Lookman, who wanted to be an exception and write their own history.
Because they reached their first European final and won it. And it did so with all the determination possible and with an absolute hero, a Lookman who will go down in posterity with a dream final that culminated an equally golden campaign and gave the city of Bergamo an unforgettable title. The Anfield goal, the stroll against the 'undefeated' Leverkusen, the prize for the 'Gasperini Era', which imposed its plan to the one of the coach from Toulouse. This Atalanta is a piece of history.
It was a whirlwind in the first half. Gasperini's men managed to do what very few had managed to do this season: blur a Leverkusen that, lost, overpowered on the flanks, unable to overcome the high pressure of the Bergamo side, succumbed in the first half without palliation.
In particular, they suffered the overflow and the success of Lookman, who had in this match his consecration. Well known by the defenses in Serie A, he could not have chosen a better showcase to present himself in Europe, with a brace that uncovered the feared and unbeaten team of Xabi Alonso.
First in the 12th minute after a great team move. Koopmeiners' calmness to find Zappacosta, the Italian winger's back pass and the area full of 'nerazzurri' players. Only the individual quality of Wirtz, Boniface, Grimaldo or Xhaka generated some doubt, always solved either by the Bergamo backline or by a giant Musso under the posts.
But tonight was not for anyone in the German team. Not even the emblematic final minutes of Leverkusen in the last few games could stand up to the Italian earthquake, which was pronounced on the Ritcher scale with another masterpiece, Lookman's third. The best of the night by the end, he must have thought. A perfect dribble, dribbling with astonishing ease for the 75th minute, and a left-footed shot into the top corner.
The goal ended the match. El Atalanta se proclamó este miércoles campeón de Liga Europa en una noche mágica, en la primera final europea de su historia, destrozando en Dublín a un histórico Bayer Leverkusen (3-0) y con el nigeriano Ademola Lookman como héroe absoluto, autor de un 'hat-trick' espectacular con el que glorificó a la diosa griega encarnada en un pequeño equipo de fútbol.
Eran 51 partidos seguidos los que el Leverkusen llevaba sin perder. Era una sensación de superioridad absoluta la que emanaba el equipo de Xabi Alonso durante toda la temporada. Era un 'triplete' histórico el que oteaba el combinado de las aspirinas, que portó el cartel de favorito en Dublín de manera merecida por su inolvidable año, en el que ganó una Bundesliga -la primera de su historia- para el recuerdo.
Pero el Atalanta, un equipo de la pequeña localidad de Bérgamo, situada a apenas 60 kilómetros de Milán, en el norte de Italia, se convirtió en aquella pequeña aldea gala irreducible de Astérix y Obélix, encarnados en Gasperini y Lookman, que quiso ser una excepción para escribir su propia historia.
Porque llegó a su primera final europea y la ganó. Y lo hizo con toda la determinación posible y con un héroe absoluto, un Lookman que pasará a la posteridad con una final de ensueño que culminó una campaña igualmente dorada y que regaló a la ciudad de Bérgamo un título inolvidable. La goleada de Anfield, el paseo ante el 'invicto' Leverkusen, el premio a la 'Era Gasperini', que impuso su plan al del técnico tolosarra. Este Atalanta es un pedazo de historia.
Fue un torbellino en la primera mitad. Los de Gasperini lograron lo que muy pocos habían logrado durante esta temporada: desdibujar a un Leverkusen que, perdido, superado en los costados, incapaz de superar la presión alta de los de Bérgamo, sucumbió en la primera mitad sin paliativos.
En concreto sufrió el desborde y el acierto de un Lookman que tuvo en este duelo su partido consagratorio. Gran conocido por las defensas en la Serie A, no pudo elegir mejor escaparate para presentarse en Europa, con un doblete que descosió al temido e invicto equipo de Xabi Alonso.
Primero en el minuto 12 tras una gran jugada colectiva. La calma de Koopmeiners para encontrar a Zappacosta, el pase atrás del carrilero italiano y el área lleno de jugadores 'nerazzurri'. Esa es la 'Dea' de Gasperini, la esencia de un equipo que asombró hace algunos años con un ataque desvergonzado y que ahora brilla también por su solidez en defensa. Justo la que le faltó a Hincapié, totalmente dormido en el corazón del área y dejando el bandeja el remate al protagonista de la noche.
Celebró Gasperini, celebró Bérgamo. Pero para Lookman no fue suficiente. Aprovechando el mareo de un Leverkusen noqueado y frío por la situación que vivía, el nigeriano decidió sacarse de la chistera uno de los goles del torneo. Recibió en el balcón del área y todo el mundo supo que iba a buscar la puerta con una diagonal. Le tiró un caño precioso a Xhaka y la puso al palo largo, inalcanzable para la estirada de Kovar.
La primera parte de la diosa griega fue perfecta, muy superior al equipo de la aspirina que, eso sí, tuvo en pies de Grimaldo el gol del empate, pero el español no acertó a definir por encima de Musso en la más clara para los alemanes, que agradecieron el descanso.
Fue cuando Xabi Alonso tocó la primera tecla. Fuera Stanisic, defensa, y dentro Boniface, delantero. La consigna del Leverkusen era clara, no tenía otra opción que volcarse en ataque. Pero ni con esas consiguió inquietar a un Atalanta que cerró filas con un Ederson omnipresente y que continuó generando peligro a la contra con un Lookman desatado, con un Koopmeiners superlativo y un Scamacca solidario.
Sólo la calidad individual de los Wirtz, Boniface, Grimaldo o Xhaka generó alguna duda, siempre solventada o por la zaga bergamasca o por un Musso gigante bajo palos.
Pero es que esta noche no era para nadie del equipo germano. Ni los emblemáticos minutos finales del Leverkusen en los últimos partidos pudieron comparecer ante el terremoto italiano, que se pronunció en la escala de Ritcher algún grado más con otra obra maestra, la tercera de Lookman. La mejor de la noche para el final, debió pensar. Un regate perfecto, desbordando con una facilidad pasmosa para ser el minuto 75, y un disparo con la zurda directo a la escuadra.
El tanto puso fin al partido. La diosa griega Atalanta, reencarnada en un pequeño equipo de Bérgamo, se convirtió en campeona, agrandando su historia, consiguiendo el segundo título de su historia tras la Copa Italia del 1963 justo una semana más tarde de haber perdido la tercera final de Copa en 5 años. Y amargando a un Leverkusen que, de igual manera, y con permiso de la 'Dea', pasará a la historia.
