There was joy and disappointment, success and failure, skill and controversy in another captivating Serie A season. The notes to the 20 participants in this year's colorful Campionato that saw Inter champion, two surprises among the qualifiers for the next Champions League (Atalanta and Bologna), a recovery from the previous year in which they played in the Europa League (Milan) and that saw Salernitana, Sassuolo and Frosinone relegated.
Not all teams are the same. Expectations at soccer's giants mean that sometimes finishing near the top end of the table can still constitute failure. And at the same time, dodging the last-day drop could represent a glorious triumph for those with more modest resources. Context, as always, is king.
All this makes it devilishly complicated to qualify a league campaign with so many different nuances in 38 games. A change of coach, a January transfer or the injury of a key player can have profound transformative effects on a soccer team. Only a fool would try to make sense of this deeply complex issue and turn it into grades out of 10. So, here we go. Remember, this is just for their Serie A displays.
INTER - 9/10 - Probably could have been a perfect 10 if not for their version of kryptonite. Sassuolo. Otherwise, the Nerazzurri were the undisputed best in Italy and finished well ahead of their pursuers. They had by far the best team and proved it to devastating effect.
MILAN - 7/10 - It was painful to watch their city cousins crush everything in their path and Stefano Pioli bore the brunt of their fans' wrath. Still, to most unbiased eyes, he did a respectable job with the resources at his disposal. Time will tell if a new occupant will be able to offer more with the players the Rossoneri possess.
JUVENTUS - 5/10 - When winning is the only thing, finishing in the top four simply isn't enough. The bianconeri briefly flirted with title contention, but their dreadful 1-0 win finally caught up with them. The Coppa Italia was a consolation, but that doesn't improve their record in a miserable Serie A battle.
ATALANTA - 8/10 - A slow start suggested to some (myself included) that Gian Piero Gasperini might have lost his magic, but he made a mockery of that assessment. Slowly but surely, he reinvented another great team and worked his way back into the Champions League. Their European form would send the brand even higher into the stratosphere and Atalanta can still finish third if they win their remaining Fiorentina game on Sunday.
BOLOGNA - 9/10 - Returning to Europe would have been achievement enough, but reaching the Champions League could be revolutionary for the Rossoblu. They played some excellent soccer and in the process developed some of the most envied talents in the league. Now they hope to make sure that the loss of Thiago Motta is not the start of a wider exodus.
ROMA - 6.5/10 - A true season of two halves, from the sullen, grumpy, red-card-filled days of Jose Mourinho to the more jovial and fluid form under Daniele De Rossi. A top six finish was enough to give them some taste of Europe, but they will be hoping to go on and finish higher next season.
LAZIO - 5.5/10 - Another club that changed coaches throughout the season to some effect, but couldn't completely erase feelings of disappointment. Second place in 2022/23 should have been something to build on, but instead their soccer regressed and they seem to have squandered any advantage over their city rivals.
FIORENTINA - 6/10 - The last dance of the Vincenzo Italiano era was inconsistent and gave much more in cup competitions than in the league. They stumbled to another European finish, which was partly due to their own efforts on the continent, but the search for a consistent goal scorer hampered them throughout.
TORIN - 6/10 - They could still end up with European soccer, which would be a reward for some, albeit unspectacular, progress. Steady defense helped propel them up the table, but an average of less than a goal per game didn't make them a team many neutrals would tune in to.
NAPOLES - 4/10 - The reigning champions made probably the worst defense of a Scudetto crown in history. Despite the loss of their coach, they should have achieved much more, but it felt like a long hangover after a glorious celebration. It started badly under Rudi Garcia and never got better. However, the fans' delight may still take years to subside.
GENOVA - 7/10 - Some poor early results had many worried about the Grifone's fate, but Alberto Gilardino steadied the ship for a more than comfortable survival. With Samp stuck for at least another year in Serie B, that gives them bragging rights in the city for some time to come. And all while playing more than respectable soccer.
MONZA - 6.5/10 - Confirming last season's revelation was impressive enough, but still you have to regret that they couldn't move on. On their day they were more than capable of giving anyone a game but lack a bit more work to make another leap forward. Decent, but I felt it could have been even better.
VERONA - 7.5/10 - Not everyone could lose half their team in January and still survive Serie A, but Marco Baroni did. Kudos to the Florentine coach and his players for fighting with such spirit and determination to defy the odds. Can they do it again next season? Never say never.
LECCE - 6.5/10 - Survival was always the goal and it was achieved with the backing of a never less than vociferous support. Still, they feel a bit trapped in a rehab facility where they could aspire to more than just keeping their heads above water. Credit for staying awake, but with the nagging thought that there could have been more possibilities.
CAGLIARI - 7/10 - A sentimental vote for Claudio Ranieri's final campaign, bringing him another season in Serie A as he did on the islands so many years ago. There were so many epic moments that his subs turned a game you could hardly have failed to be entertained by. Regards Claudio indeed.
UDINESE - 5.5/10 - Another club of constant sliding doors where the lack of consistent personnel season after season took its toll. They also cut and changed their coaches in an attempt to find form that could banish thoughts of Serie B. On the final day, Fabio Cannavaro oversaw the win that gave them home but it was far from easy.
EMPOLI - 6.5/10 - They were always under pressure in Tuscany after a terrible start to the campaign but never lost faith. They quickly discarded Paolo Zanetti, turned to Aurelio Andreazzoli before finally opting for Mr Miracles: Davide Nicola. He pulled off an epic late win Rome on the last day to keep them that way.
FROSINONE 6/10 - There was a brief period at the start of the season when they threatened to eclipse regional rivals Roma and Lazio but it soon became a tougher fight. Still, they kept Eusebio Di Francesco and at times produced decent soccer. However, it ended with the cruelest pain in the dying embers of the season.
SASSUOLO - 4/10 - Wins over Inter Apart from this, it was largely a depressing campaign as all the player sales seemed to take their toll. A serious injury to Mimmo Berardi was the lid on the coffin of relegation after more than a decade. Now the hard work begins to ensure they recover quickly.
SALERNITANA - 3/10 - A chaotic summer quickly led to a desperate year in which they looked destined for Serie B almost from the start. Without Boulaye Dia's goals they looked like a Second Division team with a scattergun approach to signing. A major restructuring will be needed to return to the top flight.

Hubo alegría y decepción, éxito y fracaso, habilidad y controversia en otra cautivadora temporada de la Serie A. Las notas a los 20 participantes en el colorido Campionato de este año que vio campeon al Inter , dos sorpresas entre los clasificados a la próxima Championes (Atalanta y Bolonia), una recuperación respecto al año anterior en el que disputó la Europa League (Milan) y que vio descender a la Salernitana, el Sassuolo y el Frosinone.
No todos los equipos son iguales. Las expectativas en los gigantes del fútbol significan que a veces terminar cerca del extremo superior de la tabla aún puede constituir un fracaso. Y al mismo tiempo, esquivar la caída del último día podría representar un triunfo glorioso para aquellos con recursos más modestos. El contexto, como siempre, es el rey.
Todo esto hace que sea endiabladamente complicado calificar una campaña de liga con tantos matices diferentes en 38 partidos. Un cambio de entrenador, una transferencia en enero o la lesión de un jugador clave pueden tener profundos efectos transformadores en un equipo de fútbol. Sólo un tonto intentaría darle sentido a esta cuestión profundamente compleja y convertirla en notas sobre 10. Entonces, allá vamos. Recuerde, esto es solo para sus exhibiciones de la Serie A.
INTER – 9/10 – Probablemente podría haber sido un 10 perfecto si no fuera por su versión de kriptonita. Sassuolo. Por lo demás, los nerazzurri fueron los mejores indiscutibles en Italia y terminaron muy por delante de sus perseguidores. Tenían, de lejos, el mejor equipo y lo demostraron con un efecto devastador.

La Coppa Italia fue un consuelo, pero eso no mejora su marca en una miserable batalla en la Serie A.
ATALANTA – 8/10 – Un comienzo lento sugirió a algunos (incluido yo mismo) que Gian Piero Gasperini podría haber perdido su magia, pero se burló de esa evaluación. Lento pero seguro, reinventó otro gran equipo y se abrió camino de regreso a la Liga de Campeones. Su forma europea enviaría la marca aún más alto a la estratosfera y Atalanta todavía pueden terminar terceros si ganan el juego que les queda Fiorentina el domingo.
BOLONIA – 9/10 – Regresar a Europa habría sido un logro suficiente, pero llegar a la Liga de Campeones podría ser revolucionario para los Rossoblu. Jugaron un fútbol excelente y en el proceso desarrollaron algunos de los talentos más envidiados de la liga. Ahora esperan asegurarse de que la pérdida de Thiago Motta no sea el comienzo de un éxodo más amplio.
ROMA – 6.5/10 – Una verdadera temporada de dos mitades, desde los días hoscos, gruñones y llenos de tarjetas rojas de José Mourinho hasta la forma más jovial y fluida bajo Daniele De Rossi. FIORENTINA – 6/10 – El último baile de la era Vincenzo Italiano fue inconsistente y dio mucho más en las competiciones de copa que en la liga. Tropezaron con otro final europeo, lo que se debió en parte a sus propios esfuerzos en el continente, pero la búsqueda de un goleador consistente los obstaculizó en todo momento.
TORÍN – 6/10 – Aún podrían terminar con el fútbol europeo, lo que sería una recompensa por algunos avances, aunque no espectaculares. Una defensa firme ayudó a impulsarlos en la tabla, pero un promedio de menos de un gol por partido no los convirtió en un equipo al que muchos neutrales sintonizarían.
NÁPOLES – 4/10 – Los actuales campeones realizaron probablemente la peor defensa de una corona de Scudetto en la historia. A pesar de la pérdida de su entrenador, deberían haber logrado mucho más, pero se sintió como una larga resaca después de una gloriosa celebración. Empezó mal con Rudi García y nunca mejoró. Sin embargo, el deleite de los fanáticos aún puede tardar años en disminuir.
GÉNOVA – 7/10 – Algunos malos resultados iniciales hicieron que muchos se preocuparan por el destino del Grifone, pero Alberto Gilardino estabilizó el barco para lograr una supervivencia más que cómoda. MONZA – 6.5/10 – Confirmar la revelación de la temporada pasada fue bastante impresionante, pero aun así hay que lamentar que no hayan podido seguir adelante. En su día eran más que capaces de darle un juego a cualquiera pero falta un poco más de trabajo para dar otro salto adelante. Decente, pero sentí que podría haber sido incluso mejor.
VERONA – 7.5/10 – No todo el mundo podría perder la mitad de su equipo en enero y aún así sobrevivir a la Serie A, pero Marco Baroni sí lo hizo. Felicitaciones al técnico florentino y a sus jugadores por luchar con tanto espíritu y determinación para desafiar las probabilidades. ¿Podrán volver a hacerlo la próxima temporada? Nunca digas nunca.
LECCE – 6.5/10 – La supervivencia fue siempre el objetivo y se logró con el respaldo de un apoyo nunca menos que vociferante. Aún así, se sienten un poco atrapados en un centro de rehabilitación donde podrían aspirar a algo más que simplemente mantener la cabeza a flote. Crédito por permanecer despierto, pero con el persistente pensamiento de que podría haber habido más posibilidades.
CAGLIARI – 7/10 – Un voto sentimental para la última campaña de Claudio Ranieri, que le ha aportado una temporada más en la Serie A como ya hizo en las islas hace tantos años. Fueron tantos momentos épicos que sus suplentes convirtieron un partido en el que difícilmente no podrías haberte entretenido. Saludos Claudio de verdad.
UDINESE – 5.5/10 – Otro club de constantes puertas correderas donde la falta de personal consistente temporada tras temporada pasó factura. También cortaron y cambiaron a sus entrenadores en un intento por encontrar la forma que pudiera desterrar los pensamientos de la Serie B. En el último día, Fabio Cannavaro supervisó la victoria que les dio home pero no fue nada fácil.
EMPOLI – 6.5/10 – Siempre estuvieron bajo presión en Toscana después de un comienzo de campaña terrible, pero nunca perdieron la fe. Rápidamente desecharon a Paolo Zanetti, recurrieron a Aurelio Andreazzoli antes de finalmente optar por Mr Miracles: Davide Nicola. Logró una victoria tardía épica Roma el último día para mantenerlos así.
FROSINONE 6/10 – Hubo un breve período al comienzo de la temporada en el que amenazaron con eclipsar a sus rivales regionales Roma y Lazio pero pronto se convirtió en una lucha más dura.
