Dear reader! Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullah. how are you all Hope all are well by God's grace. I am also fine with your prayers and Allah's infinite mercy. Today's discussion is on "Religious Intolerance and Extremism: An Invisible Threat to Social Peace"

In the history of human civilization, religion has been one of the main sources of spiritual consciousness, moral values, and social bonding. But unfortunately, throughout the ages, religion has also given rise to division, violence, and extremism. In today’s world, especially in Bangladesh and other South Asian countries, religious intolerance and extremism have become a serious social problem.

Religious intolerance is hatred, discrimination, or hostile attitudes toward people of other religions or different beliefs. When this intolerance becomes extreme and turns into violent acts, it is called extremism. Often, rumors, misinterpretations, or political interests use religion to incite people toward violence.

Mob attacks: Spreading rumors and attacking specific communities or temples/mosques.

Discrimination: Religious-based inequality in workplaces, education, or social life.

Hate speech: Insulting other religions online or offline.

Politics in the name of religion: Using religion for political purposes to spread extremism.

Terrorism: Religious extremism giving rise to terrorist activities.

In Bangladesh:

In 2021, rumors of desecrating the Holy Quran in Cumilla sparked attacks that spread across several districts, destroying homes and temples of minority communities.

In the past, even small Facebook posts have triggered attacks on entire villages.

Globally:

In India, riots fueled by religious intolerance have caused thousands of deaths.

In several Middle Eastern countries, religious extremism has led to terrorism and civil wars.

Humanitarian damage: Loss of innocent lives, injuries, or displacement.

Social division: A crisis of trust between different religions or beliefs.

Economic damage: Shops, houses, and places of worship destroyed in violence.

National security threat: Extremism undermines state stability.

Generational impact: Hatred spreads among children and youth, posing a greater danger for the future.

Proper religious education: Emphasizing peace, love, and humanity in true religious teachings.

Rumor prevention: Quick government clarification and the role of media against religious rumors.

Strict law enforcement: Strong action against violence or incitement in the name of religion.

Social awareness: Promoting interfaith dialogue, education, and cultural exchange.

Digital platform control: Rapid removal of posts/videos spreading religious hatred online.

Religion is not meant to divide people but to unite them. Yet intolerance and extremism create unrest and fear in society. If we ensure proper education, awareness, and strict enforcement of laws, we can reduce religious intolerance and extremism and build a peaceful, tolerant, and safe society.
