Ila Mitra was a leading leader of the Tevaga movement in Bangladesh, who played an important role in the struggle for the rights of farmers and Santals in Nachol Upazila of Chapainawabganj district. He was born on October 18, 1925 in Calcutta and passed B.A in 1944 from Bethune College.
Leadership in Tevaga movement
From 1946 to 1950, Ila Mitra led the Tevaga movement in Nachol region. Being the wife of a zamindar clan, she stood against the exploitation of the zamindars over the farmers and organized the farmers and Santals and led the movement. As a result of this movement, she became known as the "Queen of Nachol".
Struggle and torture





When the peasant movement intensified under the leadership of Ila Mitra, he was arrested by the police and brutally tortured in jail. In 1951 he was sentenced to 20 years in prison. Later, after the formation of the United Front government in 1954, he was released on parole and moved to Kolkata.
Elamitra Memorial Museum






To immortalize the memory of Ela Mitra, a memorial museum has been established in Raotara village of Nachol upazila of Chapainawabganj. Built on a 26th century plot of land, this two-storied mud building houses the traditional materials of the district including books, papers and rare photographs related to Tevaga movement and Ila Mitra.
Ela Mitra's struggling life and contribution will be forever remembered as a bright chapter in the history of Bangladesh.
