Discussion Meeting on the Importance and Significance of Zakat at the Upazila Level Held

Zakat plays an indispensable role in establishing social justice, alleviating poverty, and maintaining balance within society. With this fundamental objective in focus, a discussion meeting titled “The Importance and Significance of Zakat at the Upazila Level” was held in Chapainawabganj district. The meeting took place at the auditorium of the District Model Mosque and served as an important platform to reconsider Zakat management from religious, social, and administrative perspectives.

The meeting was graced by Mr. Maruf Afzal Rajan, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO), Sadar, Chapainawabganj, as the Chief Guest. The session was presided over by Mr. Md. Golam Mostafa, Deputy Director, Islamic Foundation, Chapainawabganj. Imams and khatibs from different mosques, officials and employees of the Islamic Foundation, teachers, social workers, and respected members of the community were present at the event.

In his opening remarks, the Chairperson Mr. Md. Golam Mostafa highlighted the religious foundation and social significance of Zakat. He stated that Zakat is not merely an act of worship, but a comprehensive socio-economic system. If Zakat is properly collected and distributed, it can significantly reduce poverty in society. He also mentioned that the Islamic Foundation has been working for a long time to raise public awareness about Zakat and to strengthen institutional Zakat management.

In his speech as the Chief Guest, the Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mr. Maruf Afzal Rajan emphasized the practical implementation of Zakat. He stated that the core objective of Zakat is to make underprivileged people self-reliant. Simply paying Zakat as a ritual does not fulfill the responsibility; ensuring that it reaches the rightful recipients and appropriate sectors is the real challenge. He expressed the view that effective Zakat management at the upazila level is possible through coordinated efforts among the administration, religious institutions, and conscious members of society.

He further added that, in the present context, it is crucial to utilize Zakat in productive sectors. For example, small businesses, sewing machines, livestock rearing, or vocational training can help transform a poor individual into a self-sufficient one. Such initiatives not only improve the living standards of Zakat recipients but also lay the foundation for sustainable social development.

During the discussion, speakers also addressed issues related to the misuse and improper distribution of Zakat. In many cases, although Zakat is given individually, it fails to bring about long-term positive change. Considering this reality, the speakers emphasized the need for institutional and planned Zakat management. They suggested that mosque-based Zakat funds, transparent beneficiary lists, and regular monitoring could make the system more effective.

Imams and khatibs participating in the meeting stated that the social dimension of Zakat should be highlighted more strongly in khutbahs and religious discussions. People should be encouraged to give Zakat not only in pursuit of spiritual reward but also out of a sense of responsibility for social transformation. They further emphasized the importance of continuous awareness and educational programs to eliminate misconceptions and negligence regarding Zakat.

Another key aspect of the discussion was the proposal for data-driven Zakat management at the upazila level. The speakers noted that creating an updated database of poor and disadvantaged individuals would significantly enhance transparency and effectiveness in Zakat distribution. This would ensure that genuine beneficiaries are not deprived and would also increase the confidence of Zakat donors.

In his concluding remarks, the Chairperson Mr. Md. Golam Mostafa stated that Zakat is a powerful social instrument which, if used properly, can pave the way toward building a poverty-free society. He called for joint efforts by the administration, religious leadership, and the general public to develop an effective Zakat model at the upazila level.

Overall, the discussion meeting titled “The Importance and Significance of Zakat at the Upazila Level” was considered a significant initiative to move Zakat beyond mere religious formality and integrate it into a practical development framework. The participants expressed optimism that if the opinions and proposals raised during the meeting are implemented, a positive transformation in Zakat management will take place in Chapainawabganj as well as in other upazilas across the country.
