Bangladesh witnessed the end of a defining political chapter today with the death of Begum Khaleda Zia, one of the most influential and polarizing leaders in the country’s history. The former Prime Minister and long-time chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) passed away at the age of 80 while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Dhaka. Her death has triggered nationwide mourning and renewed reflection on her complex political legacy.

Begum Khaleda Zia was the first female Prime Minister of Bangladesh, serving two terms in office from 1991 to 1996 and 2001 to 2006. She entered politics following the assassination of her husband, former President Ziaur Rahman, in 1981. Initially seen as an unlikely political figure, she gradually transformed into a formidable leader, commanding mass support and reshaping opposition politics in Bangladesh.

Her first premiership marked a historic transition, as Bangladesh returned to a parliamentary democratic system after years of military-backed rule. During her administrations, her government emphasized economic liberalization, rural development, education expansion, and private-sector growth. Supporters credit her with strengthening democratic institutions and maintaining Bangladesh’s sovereignty in regional geopolitics.

Khaleda Zia was widely known for her uncompromising political stance. She remained firm in opposition movements, often leading street protests and nationwide strikes to challenge governments she viewed as authoritarian. Her long-standing rivalry with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina dominated Bangladesh’s political landscape for over three decades, creating an intensely polarized environment often referred to as the “battle of the two Begums.”

However, her career was not without controversy. During and after her second term, her government faced allegations of corruption, misgovernance, and political violence. In later years, she was convicted in multiple corruption cases, which her party consistently described as politically motivated. Her imprisonment and subsequent restricted release became a focal point of domestic and international human rights discussions.

In recent years, Khaleda Zia’s health severely deteriorated. She suffered from multiple chronic illnesses, including liver disease, diabetes, and heart complications. Despite repeated appeals from her party for advanced medical treatment abroad, she remained under treatment in Bangladesh until her final days.

Politically, she leaves behind a significant legacy and an unresolved question of leadership succession within the BNP. Her son, Tarique Rahman, is widely seen as her political heir and is expected to play a decisive role in shaping the party’s future amid an evolving political landscape.

Begum Khaleda Zia’s death is more than the loss of a former prime minister. It marks the conclusion of an era defined by ideological confrontation, mass politics, and uncompromising leadership. Her influence on Bangladesh’s democracy, whether praised or criticized, will continue to shape political discourse for years to come.
