Gang rape is a heinous crime that not only destroys the body and soul of a victim but also shakes the moral foundation of an entire society. In Bangladesh, as well as in many countries around the world, such crimes continue to occur repeatedly. Unfortunately, many times perpetrators escape justice due to political influence, financial power, or social status. This culture of impunity encourages new crimes.
A woman who becomes a victim of gang rape faces severe physical harm. From injuries to long-term health complications, the damage is often permanent. However, the greatest harm comes mentally—trauma, depression, loss of confidence, and sometimes even suicidal tendencies. The impact is not limited to the victim alone; it also affects her family and community. A climate of fear spreads through society, and women feel unsafe.
In many cases, after gang rape incidents, no legal case is filed. Victims and their families hesitate to lodge complaints due to social stigma, fear, or threats from powerful offenders. Even when cases are filed, the judicial process is often delayed. Many perpetrators, with political backing, quickly obtain bail and re-engage in crimes.
In South Asian countries, including Bangladesh, it is often observed that when influential political figures or their associates are involved in crimes, the legal process gets obstructed. Investigations move slowly, witnesses are too afraid to testify, and cases remain unresolved for years. This culture of impunity sends a dangerous message to society—“Even if you commit a crime, you will not be punished.” As a result, criminals become more emboldened.
Every incident of gang rape sparks outrage among the public. Social media fills with protests, and people take to the streets. Students and general citizens often rise in movements demanding justice. Yet, when justice does not follow, frustration spreads across society. Gradually, people lose faith in the legal and justice system. This is a serious warning sign for any state.
To address this, justice must be delivered swiftly, and special tribunals should resolve gang rape cases within a set timeframe. Investigations must be conducted free from political influence so that agencies can work independently. Victim support systems, including counseling, protection, and rehabilitation, must be ensured. Social awareness is vital, with families, schools, and media teaching respect for women. Most importantly, strict and exemplary punishment must be enforced, so that potential offenders are deterred by fear of consequences.
Gang rape is not only a crime against one woman but also a crime against the whole society. Impunity multiplies this crime. Without removing political influence, strengthening law enforcement, and raising social awareness, such crimes will never stop. It is time to unite against gang rape and impunity through strong laws, swift justice, and collective responsibility. Otherwise, society and the state will never be free from this curse.
