Drugs have become a deadly curse for today’s society. In modern times, the easy availability of yaba, ice, cannabis, heroin, and other substances is pushing the young generation into this dark pit. Once, drugs were considered a problem of only certain groups of people, but now they have spread to almost every level of society. In Bangladesh, as in many other countries, drug use and addiction have become a severe social problem.
Currently, yaba and ice are the most discussed. Yaba is a tablet made of methamphetamine and caffeine, which creates a temporary sense of excitement, energy, and pleasure. But its deadly side effects quickly destroy both physical and mental health. Similarly, ice or crystal meth is even more dangerous; using it once can cause permanent damage to the brain. On the other hand, cannabis has long been considered a “soft drug,” but its addiction is driving many young people away from education, work, and social life.
The main victims of drug addiction are young people. At a stage in life when they should be preparing for the future, many fall into the trap of drugs for various reasons. Peer pressure, curiosity, frustration, heartbreak, or unemployment often lead them to take drugs for the first time, and gradually they become addicted. Once this habit is formed, it becomes nearly impossible to escape.
The social effects of drug addiction are extremely destructive. A drug-addicted person not only harms themselves but also drags their family and community into crisis. Families face conflict, breakdown, and financial loss. To collect money for drugs, many addicts turn to theft, robbery, fraud, or other crimes. As a result, crime rates in society rise rapidly. At the same time, drug addiction destroys the future of students and young people, ruins productivity, and obstructs national development.
Another major aspect is the drug trade. As drug use increases, a vast smuggling and criminal network becomes more active behind it. They not only destroy the lives of the youth but also threaten the law and order of the state. Money from drug trade is often used in terrorism, corruption, and illegal activities. Thus, drugs are not only a health or social problem but also a national security threat.
Solving this crisis requires multifaceted initiatives. First, families must become more aware. It is important to pay attention to where children are going and with whom they are associating. Second, educational institutions must strengthen anti-drug awareness programs. Young people need to be made aware of the harmful effects of drugs in simple terms. Third, the government must take stronger measures to curb drug trafficking and business. Along with law enforcement, treatment and counseling services must be expanded for the rehabilitation of addicts.
Most importantly, society must create positive alternatives for entertainment and healthy cultural practices. Through sports, cultural activities, and creative engagement, young people can be kept active and positive, reducing the chances of them turning to drugs.
Drug addiction is a destructive path that endangers individuals, families, society, and the state at the same time. If effective measures are not taken now, the next generation will sink even deeper into this darkness. Therefore, every person, every family, and the state must unite in the fight against drugs. Only then can society be saved from this epidemic.
