According to Bloomberg, the UK gambling regulator is reviewing the possibility of permitting cryptocurrency payments.

In line with this, the UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) is considering the adoption of cryptocurrencies as a legal payment option for licensed gambling services. This move aims to incorporate the rapidly expanding community of crypto users into the regulated market, rather than continuing the existing prohibition.

The primary objective is to allow crypto transactions through approved exchanges, which would help authorities monitor and trace funds linked to illegal gambling activities.

Speaking at an event in London, Tim Miller, Director of Research and Policy at the UK Gambling Commission, stated: “We are exploring methods to allow cryptocurrencies to function as a payment option for consumers. To reduce the risks associated with unregulated gambling platforms, it is essential to assess how crypto payments can be safely integrated within a regulated framework.”

Miller added that this initiative forms part of a broader and ongoing regulatory strategy concerning digital assets.

Meanwhile, the UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) is also moving forward with finalizing its cryptocurrency regulations this year, with the goal of fully implementing the new rules by the end of 2027.
