After a year of uncertainty due to the COVID-19 virus outbreak, the Euros are finally upon us. UEFA brought the right decision last year to postpone the tournament to the summer of 2021. The 2020 edition of the European championships will be held in 11 cities across Europe. It has retained the name Euro 2020, even though it will be held this summer.
The tournament begins with the match between Italy and Turkey. It will last for a full month until July 11, giving football fans a spectacle we couldn’t enjoy last year. With fans coming back in most of the stadiums, the Euro 2020 will certainly be a blast.
First Time Held in Different Countries
The 16th edition of the European Championships in football marks the first time that the tournament is held in different countries. The venues are:
- London – Wembley Stadium
- Rome – Stadio Olimpico
- Munich – Allianz Arena
- Baku – Olympic Stadium
- Saint Petersburg – Krestovsky Stadium
- Budapest – Puskas Arena
- Seville – La Cartuja
- Bucharest – Arena Nationala
- Amsterdam – Johan Cruyff Arena
- Glasgow – Hampden Park
- Copenhagen – Parken Stadium
The format remains the same – 6 groups featuring 4 teams each. The semi-finals and final will be held at Wembley, which marks the second time the final will be held in London.
Who Wins the Title?
Portugal is the defending champions, but not the favorites this time around. Bookies and fans give England and France the biggest chances of lifting the trophy, and that’s no surprise. Les Bleus are the current world champions, while the Three Lions have improved a lot under manager Gareth Southgate.
Bookmakers give Belgium great chances to win the Euros, and there’s no question that the Eden Hazard-led team will be dangerous. Italy is surprisingly right behind Belgium on the list of favorites, followed by Germany and defending champions Portugal.
This is the first tournament for teams such as North Macedonia, who will certainly get something to prove at the Euros.
While we can’t tell which team will win it all, we’re certain in one thing – the following month will be a sight for the sore eyes of football fans around the world.
