I've always believed that for any religion we practice there should be a shred of humanity to it. I am not here to say which religion is superior but I want to give my honest view of what religion should be all about.
Most people play idolatry and then tag it as religion. They go blindly with their belief as though it has no right to be challenged and it goes for every religion we have in the country. It's saddening that the moment someone disagrees with anyone's view, rather than enlighten them, we result in violence. What has violence ever solved?
The event of the past week that happened in Nigeria where a young lady was killed because she spoke against their religion. I must say it's a disappointment to see some clerics justifying violence and claiming another human life as a way of restitution. Does that change whatever the lady has said? Does it improve the opinion of others? Even if they used it to draw the line, does that make it acceptable to practice their religion?
A lot of people don't understand who God is. If they can at least try to wrap their heads around who He is, they would know He doesn't need human help to defend Himself. He made the world and you think He needs your help in fighting for Himself if He feels offended? That's even a greater act of blasphemy for anyone to think whoever they adore in their place of worship can't do things without the help of a human who was created by Him.
Violence is not the way and it won't be because when religion is devoid of mercy, then what religion are we practising? How do you show people the need to be a part of your religion if mercy is taken out of the equation?
Most people have argued that the lady doesn't deserve mercy because she spoke against the most prominent person in their religion but my question is, what is mercy? A lot of people don't understand what mercy entails. Mercy is not what you deserve but what is given. If you deserve it then it's no longer mercy, is it?
Religion should be able to speak about mercy. I've heard situations where a lot of people spoke against the Holy Spirit and called Jesus all sorts of names but would that be a justification to kill people to prove a point? In any religion, you have no point to prove to anyone because if you have to prove a point to others to ascertain what you already tagged as "the truth" then maybe it wasn't the truth after all.
I know the actions of certain individuals cannot speak for the entire body of the religion because I've known peace-loving Muslims and those who cannot even lift their fingers to hurt a fly. I know a lot of people in their sect have also condemned the action because they believe violence is not the answer and this is my response to those who feel differently about it.
God doesn't need your help to fight His battles if there is a chance He is offended. Just because someone sins differently than you doesn't mean you are perfect and don't deserve mercy too. We are quick to cast the first stone but when the tables are turned we ask for what we have not been equipped to give; mercy. Any act of religion that is devoid of mercy is not worth practising because we cannot lose our soul while still hoping to tell people about eternity. If it's an eye for an eye, the whole world would go blind and who are we to speak to? Why would I want to listen to you if you claimed the one person that has power is worth killing for? What kind of 'god' would want you to kill another person who disagrees?
As I said, I know most Muslims felt different about the actions of their people who initiated the death of the Christian lady in Sokoto. This is my response however to those who still feel their actions are justified to have killed that lady rather than show her mercy. So, I ask them, what's the whole point of your religion if you are devoid of mercy?
We live in a world that is hard enough and we don't need to inject religious intolerance or violence to make things worse. Religion should bring people together to coexist better. In a world where we are losing humanity as most people keep doing what they feel is right, religion should unite and restore humanity. I don't know what religion we are practising when we can't even enlighten people without causing them death or bodily harm and I don't see any point in it.
