Usually Bangladesh imports electricity from India. There are several projects in which electricity is imported from India to Bangladesh. Thousands of units of electricity are being imported from India to Bangladesh every day. This imported electricity is being stored in the national grid of Bangladesh and is enriching the power sector. Even in the last few years, there was a shortage of electricity in Bangladesh and there was a lot of load shedding, so there was a lot of suffering. However, the Bangladesh government has largely compensated for the power shortage by generating electricity from various domestic power plants and importing the rest. Due to the regular production of electricity in several power plants in the country, the amount of imported electricity has become very low. And most of the electricity is being generated in different power plants in the country. It is working on several projects to meet the power shortage in Bangladesh, notable among which are Ruppur Nuclear Power Station, Rampal Power Station, Bangladesh-India Power Transmission Center, Bheramara etc.
Although Bangladesh imports thousands of units of electricity from abroad, Bangladesh has the capacity to generate enough electricity in its own power plants. And several new power plants have been built. In addition, there are a number of old power plants in Bangladesh that need to be renovated and the company can increase the power generation by an additional few thousand units. Notable among them are Bheramara Thermal Power Station, Ghorshal Power Station etc. If these power plants are renovated and new power plants start generating more electricity. As a result, I think there will be no need to import electricity from abroad. A major problem in importing electricity from abroad is the extra cost of electricity per unit. Because, even though the price of electricity imported from India used to be 6 taka per unit, now India wants more price. But Bangladesh has the capacity to generate electricity at a lower cost.
So I think Bangladesh should increase the production of electricity in the country without importing electricity from abroad at a higher price.
