Former Prime Minister of Pakistan and Chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) Imran Khan has proposed to extend the term of Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa till next elections.
Imran mentioned the proposal in an interview given to a private broadcaster on Monday (September 12).
He said the appointment of army chief should be postponed until the government is elected. A new military chief should then be elected.
Since his ouster in April last year, Imran has been making daily headlines for his constant comments about the Pakistan army chief.
Earlier this month in a public meeting in Faisalabad, the PTI chairman addressed the Shahbaz government and said that they are delaying the elections to appoint an army chief for themselves.
If a patriotic army chief comes he will not spare the present rulers.
Imran Khan also said that he is ready to discuss the snap poll with the coalition government to change the current situation.
Pakistan Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa's tenure ends at the end of this year. Then there is the political heat over who will be the new army chief of nuclear-armed Pakistan. Meanwhile, Imran's comments added fuel to the fire.
In that interview, Imran also asked, how can a fugitive (politician) elect the army chief with 85 seats in the National Assembly? If they (the current government) win the election, they can choose the new army chief, no problem, I have no problem either.
In response to the question of what should be the retirement date of General Bajwa, Imran Khan said that it is not a big issue, some way can be found. Provisions will be available for the development of the country.
