One person has been killed in a stampede outside a soccer stadium in Iraq. Many people were injured.

Iraq is hosting the Arabian Gulf Cup for the first time in four decades. The hosts are scheduled to play their final match against Oman on Thursday.

Reuters reports citing Iraq's state news agency that thousands of spectators were trying to enter the stadium in the country's southern city of Basra to watch the match. That's when the accident happened.


Several media reports, citing a doctor at Basra General Hospital, said two people had died. Some of the injured are in serious condition.

The Arab Gulf Cup Football Federation is considering postponing or moving the final match to another country if the security situation does not improve, Basra Governor Asad Abdel Amir told Reuters.

According to security and medical sources, 83 people were injured in the accident near the gates of Sports City.
