Harpaphe haydeniana or Yellow-spotted Millipede, cyanide millipede or also known as almond-scented millipede is a new species that I now commonly see here in Bali. They are actually native to North America, but somehow now they are thriving here, especially in my workplace during the rainy season.
I am not really sure how they can end up here, but it seems they are reproducing very fast. They can be seen all around the villa, especially in the wet or damp area, under the ornamental plantations. I think some of the compost that the gardener bought has the egg of this millipede which then hatched and thrive here
The problem is that some of my guests are afraid of this millipede, thus leaving a bit of a bad impression of my workplace. they are also really hard to get rid of. The gardener already try to use pesticides to get rid of them, but they kept on coming.
They also produce a foul smell when they are disturbed, a bit of cyanide in there, thus the cyanide millipede names come from. But they are one of the best composters out there, they eat rotten trees or organic matter, and that is the reason they might be brought up along with the compost that the gardeners buy.
