Messi started playing football at age 5 when he joined Barcelona's youth team. He spent five seasons with Barça's youth team before making his senior debut at age 17 in October 2004. He played 29 games as a substitute during that season, but did not score any goals or assists.
Messi's breakthrough came in 2005–06 when he made 20 appearances as a starter and scored 19 goals; this earned him the Golden Shoe award for scoring most goals during the season (which went to Cristiano Ronaldo of Real Madrid).
