5G is the fifth generation technology standard for cellular networks,which cellular phone companies began deploying world wide in 2019. 5G networks are cellular networks,in which the service area is divided into small geographical areas called cells. All 5G wireless devices in a cell are connected to the internet and telephone network by radio waves through a local antenna in a cell.
The main advantage of the new networks is that they will have greater bandwidth,giving higher download speeds,eventually up to 10gigabites per second(Gbit/s).
A 5G network is composed of 3 different types of cells,each requiring different antennas,each giving a different tradeoff of download speed vs. distance and service area.
environmental impact:
Lots of concerns have been raised about the visual impact of 5G transmitters on historical ly and environmentally sensitive areas.
In August 2019,a court in the United States decided that 5G technology will not be deployed without environmental impact and historic preservation reviews.
Surveillance
Due to fears of potential espionage of users of Chinese equipments vendors,several countries (including the United States, Australia and and the United Kingdom as of early 2019)Have taken actions to restrict or eliminate the use of Chinese equipment in their respective 5G networks. Chinese vendors and the Chinese government have denied these claims.
5G is a pretty touchy subject.. The "internet of things" will open up a brand new technological era, but the trade off could be severe. Time will tell. An environmental assessment is definately important. A proper one, looking at the potential of what 5G can do at the highest frequencies. And full transparency is paramount. We don't want weapons of war run by private industry, or anyone else for that matter :) Canada has only a few of these towers located in the Major cities. I'm not sure I want to see even more towers dotting our beautiful landscape.
