Introduction to Serey co-founder: Who is Daisysun?

##### Dear Sereyians, ##### ##### I would like to introduce myself to you. My real name is Chhay Lin Lim, and I am the co-founder of Serey. In this post I’d like to write some personal life stories of mine so that you have a better understanding of where I come from. In a future post, I'd like to discuss in greater detail the philosophy by which Serey has been founded. #####  * Photo verification that I am Daisysun. #### Early childhood: moving van Khao I Dang to The Netherlands My parents are both born in Kampot province close to the little town Tanie. With the Cambodian civil war of the ‘60s and the subsequent Khmer Rouge regime in the ‘70s, they were forced to flee the country and eventually ended up in the Khao I Dang refugee camp on the border between Thailand and Cambodia. #### Khao I Dang refugee camp I lived in Khao I Dang until the age of almost 5 years. I am the one bare-footed wearing red and white. #### The Netherlands (Holland) In 1991, we received residentship in the Netherlands - a small country in Europe bordering Belgium and Germany. After a few months stay in a center for asylum seekers in a city called Apeldoorn, we were placed in a home in the city of Breda. Breda has a population size of around 180,000.  * A map of Europe. #### Education There were around 20-21 Cambodian families from Khao I Dang that received residentship in the Netherlands at the same time as us, and they were all placed into the city of Breda. In our first year in the Netherlands, I went to a primary school where more Cambodian children went to. Some arrived in the Netherlands several years earlier than us so they could speak Dutch, the native language of the people from the Netherlands, much better than we could. Coming into a foreign country, not understanding the culture, barely being able to speak or understand the language, made me feel insecure. On top of that, we were also dirt poor. After this first year, my parents put me into a school that is much closer to our house. It was within 20-25 minutes walking distance. My brother and I were the only Cambodians of the school so as you may understand, we felt quite alienated.  * The city of Breda, the Netherlands. #### Grammar School (Gymnasium) In the Netherlands, children are required to do a national exam in the last year of primary school. I was 12 years old then. The exam had a significant influence on the level of secondary education you could follow. My brother and I were fortunate to have scored among the highest, and so we were accepted into one of the best local schools of the country. However, again, my brother and I were the only Cambodians of the school which was mainly dominated by Dutch people. #### University I have always had a great interest in the natural sciences during my secondary education. After graduation, I decided to study Psychobiology at the University of Amsterdam – a study focusing on the neurosciences. I thought it would be interesting to learn more about chemical processes within our brain and bodies, and investigate how these processes influence our psychology. However, after half a year, I realized that the study was not interesting enough for me so I decided to look for something else. I eventually settled on Economics and International Management. In the first year of this programme, I came across a bundle of essays from the eminent economist and social philosopher, Ludwig von Mises, who belonged to an economic school of thought called the Austrian School of Economics. These readings had such a profound impact on me that they deeply changed my outlook on the world.  * This Ludwig von Mises' bundle of essays on liberty has greatly influenced my view of the world. In my free time, I continued studying other great scholars of the Austrian tradition. Examples are Friedrich von Hayek, Henry Hazlitt, and Murray Rothbard. In addition to these books, I also read many philosophers such as Friedrich Nietzsche, John Locke, Immanuel Kant, and Robert Nozick. I loved philosophy so much that I decided to study Asian Philosophy during an exchange program to Macau. There I became more familiar with the philosophies of Daoism and Buddhism. After graduation, I successfully pursued a Master’s degree in Philosophy at University College Dublin, Ireland. #### Intellectual Influence On Creating Serey The before mentioned intellectuals have greatly influenced why I have become involved with blockchain technology and Serey.  * Did you know that this quote is inspired by the 19th century philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche who said that we should learn to dance with ideas, with words, and with the pen in order to learn how to think? ##### In a next post, I will write more about my involvement in the blockchain space, the payments industry, and the philosophy that forms the foundation of Serey. ##### For now, I hope that you have enjoyed reading my short self-introduction.
