Wissam Al Mana – a Qatari billionaire – was most famous for being the ex-husband of pop superstar Janet Jackson has emerged on the world stage again as he is taking legal action against Facebook for not stopping a cryptocurrency company for using his picture without any permission or endorsement.
Even though Wissam leads a very private life, he is wealthy and has significant influence over different matters of the Middle Eastern countries, especially in his homeland, Qatar. He is currently the owner of the Al-Mana Group, a Qatar-based multinational company. A cryptocurrency company used Wissam’s picture for its promotion due to his far-reaching influence, even though he never endorsed it.
Al Mana is suing Facebook for defamation and false advertising. He has filed his complaint at the Facebook European Headquarters in Dublin. It is an intelligent choice of place to take legal action since Europe is known for dispensing legal disputes quickly and justly compared to the USA.
Wissam Al Mana has accused Facebook of allowing the scammers to use its platform without any restrictions and the failure of the organization to stop fake advertisements. Moreover, he is not the first person to go through this ordeal as in the past, famous Dutch TV personality John de Mol had not only sued Facebook but also won the litigation. Similarly, Martin Lewis, who runs a popular Money Saving website, also fought a legal battle against Facebook.
Legal experts are of the view that the result of the whole procedure will be in Al Mana’s favour as Facebook will not be able to justify itself in the European court for spreading fake news. Because, in America, Facebook uses the First Amendment to dodge its duties to safeguard people’s reputations; however, in European countries, no such clauses exist.
Al Mana’s life has always been shrouded in mystery as he has no official social media team and does not interact with the media. The only source through which he has presented his point-of-view is his official website, at which he categorically denied being part of any cryptocurrency organization and also clarified that he is not on social media at all
