Unfortunate Men

Near the community where I live is a vocational college, where my wife used to work as a supervisor of dorm and got to know several colleagues. One of her female colleagues, Xiao Zhou, came from a nearby village. From this, my wife learned something about her mother-in-law's family and that the deaf-mute who had grown vegetables outside the school walls was her husband's older brother.

As a newly built school, the open space outside the school's courtyard wall has been idle for a long time. Later, a deaf-mute comes to open up wasteland there to grow vegetables and crops. The deaf-mute looks very old, probably not as old as he looks. I once suspect that he is not much older than me. He is busy there almost every day, digging, planting and watering. Maybe considering that he is a deaf-mute the school the school doesn’t stop him. After all, it is better than to leave the land idle.

Xiao Zhou's husband, the younger brother of the deaf-mute, died many years ago, as if he had been sent to a psychiatric hospital in a crazy way, and then there was no news. He suspected that his son was not his own, and was insane, so he threw his son into the ground and killed him.

The wife of the deaf mute died early, and they had two daughters. When they grew up, they married who lived a modest life in the countryside. They seldom went home to see their father. The property right of the house where the deaf-mute lives is also handled by Xiao Zhou and falls under her name. The deaf mutes also have a minimum living allowance, but they are all received by Xiao Zhou. The deaf-mute doesn't know anything and can't speak, living like a vagrant every day.

At noon yesterday, I went downstairs to throw garbage. I saw an old man rummaging in the trash can from afar. It was the jelly thrown away by others. The old man opened it to eat. I looked carefully and found it was the deaf-mute. Long time no see, he became a lot older, just looking at me expressionless.

When I got home, I talked to my wife about it. We only felt sorry for the deaf-mute and wanted to give him something warm to eat when we met him again.

The deaf-mute’s family is really unlucky. Their parents died early, one brother was crazy and finally died, and the deaf mute’s wife died early. The deaf mute live a vagabond life alone, picking up garbage everywhere. What a miserable man!

When I was in primary school, the classmate next to me was a boy with dirty clothes. His nose was running so long that it seemed that it would never end. He lived with his sister, brother and father, and his mother died when he was young. Every time I went to school, I had to pass by his house. There was no yard. Two adobe houses faced the path in front of the door. He and his brother often sat at the door, looking at passers-by. Their father was once taken to be an able-bodied man by the Kuomintang troops. Later, when he came back, the bad boys from the village called him "Kuomintang". His father was tall, but he was unkempt. In winter, he tied his dirty thick cotton padded jacket with straw ropes. He was also fond of drinking, and when he became drunk, he hit his sons. The eldest son sometimes scolded his father, and when he was angry, he fought with his father in the street.

I could hardly remember his sister's appearance. Later, she married someone, but soon her husband came to say that he could not find her. People didn't know whether she was sold by her mother-in-law’s family, or pushed into the well or drowned in the river. Anyway, there was no result in the end.

Their father did not live long either. Later, the older son fell ill and died, while the younger son, my classmate in the primary school, also lost his news. It is very likely that he is no longer alive now.

My mother always sighed when she talked about the "Kuomintang" family, saying that if people don't live a good life, they will ruin their family.

It is not his fault to be captured by the Kuomintang army as a soldier, but it is not a father's act to drink too much, beat and scold his children.

The influence of the original family is enormous and difficult to change, but a person's future destiny is in his own hands, and it is entirely up to him.
