Gambling is a game in which everything is forbidden. And in that game there is no financial gain or loss, so gambling. The Qur'an mentions this gambling in conjunction with the haraam acts of drinking alcohol, sacrificing in places and seeking fortune by arrows.
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: If a person says that he gambles, then he should give charity for the sin that will be committed in it. Because the call to gamble is also a sin and it is advisable to atone for that sin.
Dice is a game at this stage. If gambling is included with it, it is unanimously forbidden. And some have said, Makrooh - not Haram. Those who say that it is haram have mentioned the hadith narrated by Hazrat Buraid (RA) as a document. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: The man who has played the game of dice and sixes has dyed his own hands with the blood and flesh of a pig.
The one who plays the game of dice and sixes has disobeyed Allah and His Messenger.
In these two hadiths, it has been clearly stated that it is haraam to play dice and sixes.
Imam Shawqani writes: According to Ibn Mughafal and Ibn Musayyib, there is nothing wrong with playing dice and sixes if gambling is not mixed. They have considered the above two hadiths as a stage of dice game mixed with gambling.
Chess is a very popular sport. In Arabic it is called Shataranj. Fiqh scholars have come to different conclusions about this game. Some say it is Mubah, some say it is Makrooh and some say it is Haram.
Some of the hadiths narrated from the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) are the documents of those who say that they are forbidden. But critics and scholars of hadith-sanad have denied the veracity of those hadiths, saying that the game of chess was propagated and spread in the time of the Companions. This game did not exist before him. Therefore, the existence of any hadith is not recognized at this stage. All canceled. So what was the opinion of the disciples in this regard? It is known that they were not the same. Ibn 'Umar said, "Chess is worse than dice and sixes." Hazrat Ali (ra) said that this game is also a kind of gambling. According to some Companions, it is only Makrooh.
Again, according to some Companions and Tabi'is, it is a mubah, an innocent game. Hazrat Ibn Abbas, Abu Hurairah, Ibn Sirin, Hisham Ibn Orwa, Zayd Ibn Musayyib and Zayd Ibn Juraira have expressed this opinion.
According to this author, the latter is as authentic as the great experts. Because the truth is that no irrefutable document could be presented in favor of this game being forbidden. Apart from that, it has adequate mental training and thought training system. For this reason, this game must be considered different from dice and sixes. In doing so, they have said that the game of dice and sixes only brings joy and happiness. That is its feature. But the specialty of the game of chess is that there is a need for talent and thinking. So he has to feel like an archer.
Those who say that this game is permissible have imposed three conditions at this stage: Because there is an acute fear of not being able to perform the prayers on time. (2) There shall be no gambling in it and (3) Players shall keep their mouths free and pure from abusive, ugly-obscene speech while playing. If all these conditions are violated or if any part of it is violated, then that game will also become haraam.
