INTRODUCTION

Dengue fever is an infectious disease transmitted by mosquito . It is also called " Break Bone Fever " because it may cause severe joint and muscle pain . Dengue is transmitted by female Aedes mosquito Since no effective vaccines are available prevention is the best remedy .

DENGUE VECTOR

The carrier of the dengue virus is Aedes mosquito . It is dark brown in colour ( up to 10 mm in size ) with white spots on the body and legs and has shiny wings . Both the male and female mosquitoes feed on plant nectar , but only female can bite human beings as its mouth parts are designed for this purpose and bear stylet for sucking blood . The fernale mosquito needs to suck blood for egg production .

LIFE CYCLE OFAEDES MOSQUITO

The eggs of Aedes are black in colour and oval in shape . After two to seven days , larvae are hatched from their eggs . Larvae swim smoothly like a snake . They feed upon bacteria etc. After next two to four days , pupa is formed and does not feed at all . Pupa stage end by shedding the pupa case and adult emerges out . The newly emerged adult rests on the water surface for a short period to dry and then fly away .
