Twitter Inc on Wednesday (3/12) expanded its policy of prohibiting hate speech to include "derogatory language on the basis of ethnicity and national origin," the social networking company said in a statement.

The new regulations are Twitter's latest attempt at dealing with the platform's credible account holders. In March, Twitter banned tweets targeting people based on age, disability or disease, and in 2019 a ban on tweets targeting a person's religion or caste.
The civil rights group, Color of Change, called the change by making the rule an "important concession" after years of pressure from outside.
Color of Change is part of a coalition of advocacy organizations that has encouraged technology companies to boldly reduce hate speech.
A Twitter spokeswoman said the company had planned from the start to add a new category to its policies from time to time after examiners to ensure it was able to consistently enforce the appropriate rules.
In a statement, Color of Change Vice President Arisha Hatch criticized Twitter for failing to update policies before the United States presidency in November, despite repeated warnings by advocacy groups about violent and inhuman speech.
