Reported from Reuters, Thursday (17/09/2020), as many as four bronze from the Vijayanagara period, which lasted from the 14th to 17th centuries, were stolen in 1978 from a temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu in Nagapattinam.
Inggris has returned three antique bronze statues to Indian authorities. The statue has been stolen for more than 40 years from a Hindu temple in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu.
The thieves were convicted in India at the time, but it was only in 2019 that three statues were found, when the Indian High Commission in London discovered that one was being offered for sale by a Inggris-based dealer.
Notified by the embassy, the Metropolitan Police's Arts and Antiquities Unit investigates and can determine that the dealer has purchased the item in good faith.
Once he was shown evidence that bronze had been stolen, he volunteered to hand over the statue, and identified two additions from the same group, police said. The three of them will now be returned to their homeland.
The Indian High Commissioner tweeted photos of the statue, taken during the official handover to the Tamil Nadu government, describing the event as a "auspicious moment.
Metropolitan Police say they are proud to be involved in returning bronze to India.
Not only are they beautiful and historically important, they certainly have religious importance so it is gratifying that they were returned to the temple they were taken in, Chief Detective Inspector Tim Wright said in a statement.
