According to information as reported by Reuters and AFP, Sunday (4/7/2021). The military plane failed to land in the Philippines until it crashed and caught fire. As a result 17 people were reported dead, while 40 others are now under medical treatment.
Philippine Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said. "So far 40 injured people have been rescued and 17 bodies recovered. Rescue and recovery is ongoing".
Philippine Defense Secretary Lorenzana said as many as 92 people, most of them army personnel, were on board the C-130 Hercules when the crash occurred. The accident occurred while trying to land on Jolo island, Sulu province on Sunday (4/7) at 11.30 local time.
"Unfortunately, the plane sped off the runway and tried to regain power but failed," said Armed Forces Commander General Cirilito Sobejana.
A military spokesman, Colonel Edgard Arevalo, said there was no indication of an attack on the plane. However, the investigation into the accident has not yet started and is currently still focusing on rescuing and treating the victims.
Uploaded photos on the Facebook page of local media, Pondohan TV, showed the plane wreckage engulfed in flames. Thick black smoke billowed above the houses located near the crash site.
Last month, a Black Hawk military helicopter crashed during a training mission north of the capital Manila. At least six people died in the accident. Three pilots and three other airmen were killed when the S70-i series plane crashed near the Crow Valley training ground north of Manila, causing the entire fleet to be grounded.
