Looking to take a step back in history? Look no further than Fort Anne, in the town of Annapolis Royal, which itself boasts a National Historic District.  Located in an area named Nme'juaqnek by the Mi'kmaq, meaning place of bountiful fish, Fort Anne, Canada's first administered historical site, was also one of the most hotly contested areas in North America in the 17th and 18th centuries, when European powers battled for supremacy in North America. Set on the banks of the Annapolis River, the fort was first erected by the Scots, built up by the French, then eventually taken over and re-built by the British.
