The tribute post on Pele's social media website emphasised the star's global popularity and made reference to an instance from the Nigerian civil war in which rival groups agreed to a ceasefire so that they could attend a game Pele played there.

According to medical accounts, Pele's fight with colon cancer led to multiple organ failure, which ultimately led to his death. He was hospitalised for a number of illnesses, including a respiratory infection, as well as heart and renal issues.
Pele, widely regarded as the game's most gifted player, guided Brazil to three World Cup victories in 1958, 1962, and 1970. With 77 goals in 92 appearances, he continues to be the top goal scorer for Brazil.
