The Reins of Life and Its Necessity
Human life is like a boat, which needs the right helm and an effective rudder (Lagan) to reach its destination. You are right, when the rudder or 'Lagan' of this life boat is left, it goes astray and is led astray. This wrong path not only causes worldly harm, but from a religious perspective it leads people to a terrible end, which in Islamic terminology is known as Hell or eternal punishment. An unbridled life is a lifestyle that lacks self-control, morality, fear of God (taqwa), and a specific goal.
1. What is an unbridled life and why is it the wrong path?
The main characteristics of an unbridled life are slavery to the will and lack of responsibility.
A. Following the desires and instincts (slavery of the self):
In Islam, the desires and biological needs of a person are referred to as the 'self'. An unbridled person is completely under the control of his nafs-e-ammarah (the soul that incites to evil deeds). He surrenders to momentary pleasures, enjoyments, and forbidden temptations.
Examples: Earning money through unlawful means, excessive drinking/gambling, engaging in sexual immorality, or violating the rights of others—all of these are the results of letting go of the reins of the self.
B. Violation of the limits of Sharia:
Allah Almighty has set some clear limits (hudud) through Sharia to guide mankind on the right path. A person who leads an unbridled life, consciously or unconsciously, crosses those limits.
As a result: Obligatory (fard) acts are neglected (such as prayer, fasting), and forbidden acts are accepted as normal. This transgression pushes him towards the wrong path.
C. Suppression of conscience:
Every human being has a sense of right and wrong (taqwa or fitrah) given by Allah. If one continues to sin unbridled, this conscience eventually becomes dull. As a result of repeated mistakes, a person loses the ability to regret and self-examine his actions. As a result, the wrong path seems normal to him.
2. Main signs of the wrong path (driving forces towards Hell)
There are some specific signs or driving forces that lead a person closer to Hell when he goes on the wrong path in an unbridled life.
Signs of the wrong path and its consequences according to the Quran and Hadith
Shirk and Bid'ah Associating partners with Allah or introducing something new in religion is an unforgivable sin, which directly paves the way to Hell.
Neglecting prayer Prayer is the difference between faith and disbelief. It is the first thing that is neglected in an unbridled life, which weakens faith.
Usury, bribery and unlawful earnings are living off the wealth acquired by destroying the rights of others, which removes blessings from life and drowns the person in the ocean of sins.
Arrogance and pride are thinking oneself superior and looking down on others. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "Whoever has a grain of pride in his heart, he will not enter Paradise."
Backbiting and lying are defamatory acts that create chaos in society and bring severe punishment in the afterlife.
Disobedience to Parents Islam places the highest importance on the service of parents. Disobeying or causing them pain is a serious crime.
3. The Final End: The Horrors of Hell
According to Islamic belief, the final end for a person who follows the wrong path of an unbridled life is Hell. Allah Almighty has repeatedly reminded people of its horrors in the Quran so that they may be warned.
A. Why Hell?
Hell is a place that is an expression of Allah's justice. This eternal punishment is destined for a person who uses the freedom given to him by Allah in this world unbridled and rejects His instructions. It is essentially the result of sin and a punishment for an incorrigible soul.
B. Some of the terrifying descriptions of Hell:
Fire and intense heat: The Quran states that the fire of Hell is 69 times hotter than the fire of this world (Sahih Bukhari). This fire will pierce the skin and reach the heart.
Drink and Food: The food of the people of Hell will be a thorny bitter fruit called 'Zaqqum' and the drink will be 'Hamim' (boiling water) and 'Ghassaq' (a drink mixed with pus and blood).
Eternity: The most terrifying aspect is that for some sinners, this punishment will be eternal. That is, there will be no other way out for them. When a life of unbridled life leads a person to the path of disbelief or polytheism, this outcome is inevitable.
Quranic Quote: Allah says, "And those who deny Our verses and turn away from them in arrogance, the gates of heaven will not be opened for them, nor will they enter Paradise, until a camel enters through the eye of a needle. And thus do We recompense the criminals." (Surah Al-A'raf, 7:40)
4. Ways to Hold the Reins: Remedy and Return
There is always a chance to return from a wrong path, until a person falls to the ground of death. Islam has given some clear guidelines for returning from this wrong path.
1. Repentance (Repentance and Return): The first step is to sincerely repent to Allah. Admitting the past mistake, turning away from it completely, and making a firm resolve not to do it again in the future.
2. AttaininTo know that Allah sees everything and every deed will be accounted for. This is the foundation of self-control.
3. Acquiring knowledge: Gaining accurate knowledge about Islam. Knowing what pleases Allah and what displeases Him.
4. Good company: Leaving bad friends and surroundings and associating with people who help one walk in the path of Allah.
5. Constancy in worship: Bringing life into a disciplined routine by performing five daily prayers, fasting, and other acts of worship. Worship is what holds the reins of life tightly.
6. Remembrance of the Hereafter: Regularly remembering death, the grave, and the punishment of the Hereafter. This helps one to become disinclined to the enjoyment of this temporary world.
The issue you raised carries a deep warning message for every believer. Living a life of unrestrained living may bring temporary happiness or salvation, but its long-term result is to lose the path of life and ultimately to head towards Hell. As an intelligent person, we should not give in to our instincts and firmly hold the reins of life with the power of knowledge, conscience, and faith. Only by following the path guided by Allah with restraint can we avoid the wrong path and reach the desired destination .
