Excessive talking or talkativeness often diminishes a person's personality. There is a proverb, "If talking is silver, then silence is gold." Refraining from excessive talking or speaking in moderation is not only a moral virtue, it is also a sign of mental maturity and intelligence.
Below is a detailed discussion on the importance of refraining from excessive talking and its benefits:
1. Protecting self-esteem and personality
When a person talks more than necessary, he unknowingly says many things that are harmful to his personality. People take those who talk less seriously. On the other hand, those who talk all the time lose their weight. There is no alternative to speaking in moderation to maintain seriousness and maintain one's respect in society.
2. Reducing the possibility of mistakes
The more a person talks, the more likely he is to make mistakes. When people talk excessively, they get involved in lies, backbiting, and irrelevant matters. Hazrat Ali (RA) said, "The human tongue is like a predator; if you let it go, it will bite." Controlling your mouth can help you get rid of many social and family disputes.
3. Improving Listening Skills
When we reduce our talking, our listening skills increase. Being a good listener is much more difficult and honorable than being a good speaker. Listening carefully to the people around us makes it easier to understand their point of view and increases knowledge. Nature has given us two ears and one mouth—this means that we should listen twice as much as we talk.
4. Mental peace and energy conservation
Speaking is a mental and physical energy-consuming activity. If you engage in pointless arguments or stories all day, your brain gets tired. Those who talk less can use their inner thinking power. Silence gives people the opportunity to do self-reflection, which helps in increasing mental peace and creativity.
5. Protecting privacy
People who talk excessively cannot maintain their own or others' personal privacy. Under the influence of emotion or in a moment of excitement, they leak information that they later regret. If you talk moderately, you have control over yourself.
Ways to control excessive talking
It is not possible to change the habit of excessive talking in a day. This requires conscious effort:
Think before you speak: Take at least three seconds before speaking. Think about whether the statement is true? Is the statement necessary? Is the statement kind or positive? If the answer is 'no', it is better to remain silent.
Answer questions briefly: When someone asks something, answer as much as necessary. Do not prolong the speech by giving additional explanations.
Diary writing habit: Write everything on your mind in a diary without telling people. This reduces the burden on your mind and eliminates the need to be light to others.
Enjoy silence: Make a habit of spending time alone. Instead of considering silence as uncomfortable, accept it as a source of peace.
Speaking in moderation is a sign of advanced culture. It makes people wiser and improves social relationships. Refraining from excessive talking does not mean that you are a recluse; rather, it means that you value your words and use them only at the right time.
Remember, actions are more important than words. If we reduce our talk and focus more on actions, success will come faster.
