Among the moral and character qualities of a person, shame (haya) is a quality that keeps human civilization, religion, ethics and society well-organized. No civilized society, religion or moral philosophy in history has denied shame. Rather, shame has always been considered one of the foundations of human excellence. Therefore, when it is said—“Giving up shame means giving up everything”, it does not mean only the absence of shame; rather, the destruction of human character, ethics, ideals, beliefs, values and dignity—everything. In this article, we will discuss the matter in detail from social, religious, psychological and moral perspectives.

1. Shame—The Basic Basis of Human Character

Shame is a natural quality of humans. Although humans are not inherently shy, it is socially developed and deeply rooted in morality. Through shame, humans understand what should be done, what is wrong, what is anti-social, and what is in line with their dignity. This sense of shame keeps people away from crime, prevents them from arrogance, and guides them towards decency.

Without shame, humans tend to be bestial.

Because there is no place for decency, modesty, or moral shame in animals. Because humans have shame, they are orderly, polite, and civilized.

2. Losing shame means moral decline

When a person loses shame, he no longer considers any act to be wrong. He loses the ability to self-criticize his behavior. As a result, the following weaknesses arise—

a. Sin no longer feels like sin

Shame hides a person from sin and keeps him away from wrongdoing. But if there is no shame, people become bold and continue to sin and do not want to cover it up. Gradually, he starts to consider wrongdoing as normal.

B. Destruction of decency and ethics

A shameless person loses his self-control. His speech, behavior, dress and grooming—everything starts to become immodest. As a result, chaos is created in society and people start to hate him.

The family is the primary school of morality. When someone in the house becomes shameless, moral degradation spreads—

Marital discord increases

Children go the wrong way

Disrespect is created in society

3. The importance of shame from a religious perspective

In religion, shame is called a branch of faith. Islam, Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism—all religions have called shame a symbol of purity of heart and morality.

In Islam, it is said:

"Shame is part of faith"

That is, the brokenness of faith is seen in the one who does not have shame.

Another saying says—

"When you have no shame, you will do whatever you want."

This means that a shameless person forgets the boundaries of his actions, which results in destruction.

In Hinduism,

Shame (Hri) is considered a goddess. Losing shame is said to be the root cause of sin.

In Buddhism,

Shame is described as the main force of morale and aversion to sin.

All religions accept—if you lose shame, everything is lost.

4. Lack of Shame and Modern Society

In modern society, slogans like “Do whatever you want”, “Express yourself”, “Shame and shyness are old ideas”—these are pushing people towards shamelessness.

As a result—

Obscenity is increasing

Social relationships are weakening

Immorality seems normal

Esteem is decreasing

Limitlessness is increasing in young society

The more shameless people are becoming in today's world, the more family, society, values—everything is being destroyed.

5. What happens in personal life when shame is lost?

a. Self-respect is destroyed

A person who becomes shameless destroys his own respect. Society no longer gives him importance.

b. Spirituality is lost

Shame keeps people on the right path and teaches control. A shameless person can no longer feel himself from the heart.

c. Addiction to wrongdoing

Indecency, lies, cheating, illegal earnings, evil deeds—all become normal.

d. Values collapse

When shamelessness reaches its extreme level, human humanity is eroded. The mentality of seeing people as human beings is destroyed.

1. Protection of morality

Shame acts like a moral guard inside a person.

2. Keeps away from sin

Shame makes people understand what is wrong.

3. Increases decency

Speech, behavior, dress—everything becomes decent.

4. Improves personality

A shy person is naturally calm, restrained and polite.

5. Increases respect in society

People respect him by seeing elegance in his behavior.

Because—

1. Shame is the door of morality

Once this door is opened, sin starts entering, and a person loses everything.

2. A shameless person does not understand any mistake

As a result, he cannot be corrected.

3. Shamelessness is the beginning of all sins

Many big crimes start from small shameless behaviors.

4. Without shame, ideals, faith, values—nothing survives

Even relationships, families, society—everything collapses.

Shame is not just a feeling; It is a shield, a strength, a source of spiritual and moral power. When a person loses his shame, he comes out of his moral shell and is defeated by all kinds of immorality, sin, greed, desire, and evil inclination. Therefore, it has been rightly said—

“To give up shame means to give up everything.”

The life of one who has shame in his heart has morality, purity, decency, faith, honor—all; and the life of one who does not have shame in his heart is in his own hands.

It brings about our own downfall. Therefore, we should maintain shame, value it, and make it our companion in every aspect of life.
