It does not carry any physical or literal meaning, but rather it refers to a person's moral character, decency and self-control.

The veil of the eyes: The greatest spiritual covering

When we hear the word veil, we usually think of women's clothing or external covering. But the proverb 'The veil of the eyes is the biggest veil' carries a deeper, spiritual and moral concept than the physical veil. It teaches us that the external covering is only a symbol, but the real veil is inner restraint and purity. Since the eyes are the gateway to our mind and the main means of connecting with the outside world, restraining the gaze or protecting the 'veil of the eyes' is the greatest spiritual and moral security.

1. Why are the veils of the eyes the biggest?

The eyes are one of the most sensitive and influential organs of the human body. Through them, we observe the external environment, receive information and, based on it, guide our mind and brain. The following reasons work behind the veil of the eyes being the biggest:

The gateway to the mind: The eyes are called the window of the mind. Whatever is caught in the eyes, directly affects the mind. An uncontrolled gaze can create bitter thoughts and desires in the mind. Therefore, restraining the gaze means taking the first step to keeping the mind free from pollution.

Source of Karma: Most of the bad deeds or sins of humans originate through the gaze. The first glance at something illegal or immoral leads to a major wrongdoing later. For example, in Islam, although the first glance is forgiven as an unintentional mistake, repeated glances or intentional glances are called sins (Sahih Bukhari).

Symbol of Self-Control: The physical veil partially separates a person from society, but the veil of the eyes indicates the ability to fight one's inner desires at every moment. It is the ultimate test of self-control and willpower.

Applicable regardless of gender: The external veil is usually associated with women, but the veil of the eyes is equally important and essential for both men and women. The Quran and Hadith first command men to restrain their gaze, which proves the universal importance of this veil. (Surah An-Nur: 30, 31)

2. Its importance from a religious and moral perspective

Various religious and moral teachings have placed special emphasis on the restraint of the gaze.

A. Eye Covering (Ghazul Bashar) in Islam:

In Islam, 'Ghazul Bashar' (controlling the gaze) is considered the mainstay of veiling. The Quran commands believing men and women to control their gaze and guard their private parts.

Achieving Purity: Allah Almighty says, "That is purer for them." (Surah An-Nur: 30). Controlling the gaze protects the soul from impurity and helps in achieving purity.

Social Peace: Eye Covering helps in maintaining decency, mutual respect and security in society. It prevents wrong desires, rape, extramarital affairs and other moral lapses.

Adultery of the Eye: Intentionally looking at another woman is called "adultery of the eye" in the Hadith. That is, not being able to control the gaze is considered a moral crime.

B. Moral and Human Values:

Beyond religious boundaries, eye protection is an important moral behavior.

Respect for others: It teaches that a person should be respectful of their human nature, not judged on the basis of their external beauty or physical appearance.

Attention and concentration: Keeping the gaze restrained helps a person to focus on his goals and work, keeping him away from unnecessary attractions and distractions.

3. Application and benefits of eye protection

Applying the concept of eye protection to life means:

First, restraint at sight: Immediately averting the gaze when it is accidentally or unintentionally caught. Refraining from looking intentionally a second time.

Avoiding illicit scenes: Refraining from watching obscene and immoral scenes on television, the internet, social media or anywhere else.

Mind protection: Controlling the mind along with the gaze, so that no wrong thoughts or desires can take root in the mind.

Benefits of eye protection:

Mental peace: The mind gains peace by being free from wrong thoughts and desires.

Strength of character: Self-control makes a person's character stronger and more solid.

Moral security: Protects society from moral degradation and increases mutual respect.

Physical covering or clothing is certainly necessary to maintain decency in society, but it is only an external measure. Real and ultimate security comes when a person controls his gaze, which protects his mind and soul. A person who can control his eyes can practically control his mind, heart and all his instincts.
