Trafficking in women for the purpose of sexual exploitation is a burning question of today's modern era. It is not a new problem. It existed for centuries and still exists in the world.
Women trafficking has been described as a modern day form of slavery. Too often the crime of sex trafficking is ignored because it is termed 'Prostitution'.
Trafficking of women is an international commercial activity in which force, coercion and fraud are used to transport women across international boundaries for economic gain.
Women and girls are usually trafficked for the purpose of sexual and economic exploitation, particularly prostitution and pornography, forced labour, arranged marriages or to be 'sold' as brides, portage and domestic functions in conflict situations.
Women and girls tend to suffer a disproportionately heavy impact owing to trafficking.
Every country in the world is affected by trafficking either as a country of destination, transit or origin, or in combination. Many of the developing or the third world countries are trying to hide this problem 'under a rug' due to lack of financial sources.
With an ever-widening gap between the rich and the poor both nationally and internationally declining socioeconomic status of women, increasing profits for traffickers, lack of government action, and, in some cases, governmemt complicity, the trafficking in women is on the increase.
Trafficking usually happens within a domestic territory of one country, which is basically moving women from one section of the country to another. It is often the case where women coming from rural environment are moving to the big cities in search of better life and better earnings easily fall a prey to traffickers who deceive them with fabricated promises for ' bright future'.
To cap up the discussion, we can say that trafficking in women is not just a transnational issue, but a national also. Governments of every country should devise appropriate methods and enforce laws to check trafficking. Something needs to be done as it is the need of hour.
