Hello and Good afternoon to every Sereyian out there, I hope everything is going well as usual. Stay health and clean everyday and time.
Today, I will like to discuss with you about one of the most common antibiotics out there in every Pharmacy and Chemist shops which is TETRACYCLINE
Antibiotic simply means Anti-organism, it is any medicine or drug that hinders the life activities of an organism or even destroys it such as penicillin and carbapenems
Tetracycline as antibiotic, is one most common antibacterial drug that works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis and as such they are known to prevent the action of bacteria on any susceptible host but they do not kill the bacteria.
Any drug that works by the affecting the life processes of a bacteria but does not kill it is known as bacteriostatic but those that kills it are known as bactericides
At this juncture, let us take them one after the other and explain its therapeutic usages and side effects
Tetracycline works after being administered by a sick person through its binding action on bacteria 30s ribosome subunit which forms the protein by accepting binding of the aminoacyl-tRNA to the acceptor site on the mRNA-ribosome complex and as such it inhibits the formation of new bacteria proteins when it comes in contact with the bacteria in the body tissues or blood after assimilation.
So in the real sense Tetracycline working mechanism is like that of a blocker which prevents the binding of transfer RNA to the messenger RNA during protein synthesis
Tetracycline display broad spectrum of activity and are effective against many bacteria such as Ricketssia, Chlamydia, Mycoplasma(NO cell wall) types and are also used to treat Pnuemonia , other respiratory tract infections, cholera, acne, trachoma, certain infection of urinary systems, genital systems and some diseases that are spread by infected animals
There is one very important aspect you need to be careful about when taken tetracycline and that is its ability to react with food when taken together especially dairy foods(such as cheese and milk). This is because tetracyclines forms insoluble chelates with calcium when taken simultaneously with milk or other dairy products or after a short while and as such it will not be absorbed properly in the gastrointestinal tract which will eventually cause it not to provide its therapeutic effect
So, it is advisable to take Tetracyclines 1hour before meals or like 3 hours after meals to avoid indigestion of the drug
Now let us go the adverse effect of tetracyclines which is very common among children.
You will notice that in some children when their teeth grows, you will see it stained and dirty, this is because at times their mothers took Tetracycline medication after 4 month of gestation and since the mothers and fetus blood are exchanged during pregnancy, it will in one way or the other affect the baby and as such Tetracycline should be avoided at this time
Moreover, it can lead to malformation of enamel when the teeth is growing and as well it can cause staining of teeth, if given to children under 8 years of age
Finally, its side effects also include Diarrhea, stomach upset, loss of appetite, Nausea, white patches in the oral cavity and so on
I hope we learn one or two things about Tetracycline Antibiotics
Thanks for going through my Post
