There are several stages in the Aceh Marriage Customs, namely:
Stages of applying.
carrying ranup-betel is a hereditary tradition that is no stranger to the Acehnese people in Indonesia, when a man wants to propose to a woman he loves.
Our custom in Aceh, if to find a mate for a boy who is considered an adult, then the family will send someone who is considered wise and trusted in speaking (called seulangke) to take care of this matchmaking. If Seulangke has got the girl in question, he will first review the status of the girl, whether she is still a virgin or a widow. If no one has one, then he will convey the intention of proposing to the girl.
So, after getting the girl, on the agreed day, a group of elders from the male side came to the girl's parents' house with betel and rings to strengthen the bond of love. After the application is over, the man will beg to leave and the woman's family will ask for time to discuss with their daughter about whether or not the man's application is accepted or not.
Engagement Stages.
If the application is accepted, the groom's family will come back to discuss when the wedding day will take place, including determining how much dowry will be received and also how many guests will be invited. Usually at this event at the same time an engagement ceremony is held in the form of a gold ring.
At this event, the men will deliver a variety of Acehnese specialties, yellow sticky rice, various fruits, a set of women's clothing and jewelry tailored to the abilities of the male family. But if this bond is broken in the middle of the road caused by the man who decided then the golden mark will be considered lost. But if the cause is a woman, then the gold mark must be returned twice.
Wedding party
Before the wedding ceremony takes place, three days and three nights a ceremony (wearing henna) is held for the groom and the bride. This custom is strongly influenced by India and Arabia. but now the custom has shifted to only brides who use henna, especially in Indonesia.
Then preparations are made for consent. In the past, Ijab Kabul could be done at the KUA or at the prayer room closest to the house without the bride present. but now it is growing with the acceptance of marriage which is carried out in large mosques, especially at the Baiturrahman Grand Mosque, on the second day of the bride and groom along with their families and invited guests. The Ijab Kabul of the groom to the woman is attended by the marriage guardian, the head of the village, witnesses and also the family concerned.
