Governments around the world are in no hurry to phase out fossil fuels and directly or indirectly support their use, Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg said at a U.S.-organized climate summit.
"Today is the year 2021. And the fact that we're still having this discussion, moreover, still supporting the use of fossil fuels directly or indirectly through taxes, is a shame," Tunberg said.
Governments must eliminate fossil fuel subsidies to comply with the Paris Climate Accord commitments, the activist said. "Either you do that, or you have to explain to your children and everyone else most affected why you're giving up on the goal of keeping global warming within 1.5 degrees without even trying to do something," she pointed out.
