Marigold is one of the winter flowers. There is no substitute for all marigolds including weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, Victory Day, Independence Day and Martyr's Day. The juice of marigold leaves is very useful in stopping bleeding of cut skin, drying cuts and as antiseptic.
Caste:
Chinese, marigold, African and French varieties of marigold are cultivated more in Bangladesh. Varieties of marigolds are yellow, red, orange, dark brown, red yellow etc. African trees are straight and tall, 30-100 cm tall. The flowers are spotted with orange, yellow and dark brown spots. French marigolds are short and bushy, 15-30 cm tall. Flowers are small in size, abundant and red in color. Kamala Sundari tree is very hardy. The flowers are dark orange. As the branches are more, the flowers last longer. Flower size is 4 to 5 cm.
Seedling preparation:
Marigold seedlings can be propagated by cuttings and seeds. Seedlings are produced by sowing seeds in seedbeds in November. Although it can be cultivated throughout the year, the yield is better in winter. For grafting, marigold branches should be cut 8-10 cm long. In the seedbed, the pieces of branches should be planted in two phases. The suitable time is in March. The seedling should be kept wet by regular irrigation. Leaves develop within 20-25 days.
Land selection and preparation:
Elevated, well-drained loam and fertile soil are suitable for marigold cultivation. The land should be prepared by plowing four or five times and turning the soil with a ladder. If you are cultivating in a tub or pot, mix three parts loam, clay or loam soil with one part dung to make a compost soil mixture. This fertilizer should be filled in tubs or containers or polybags.
Fertilizer application:
40 kg of rotted cow dung, 2 kg of urea fertilizer, 3 kg of TSP fertilizer and 2 kg of MOP fertilizer are required for each century of land. These fertilizers should be mixed with the soil.
Seedling planting:
One-month-old seedlings made from seeds or from cuttings are transplanted. Seedlings are planted in December. Distance from row to row will be 40-50 cm and distance from plant to plant will be 30-40 cm.
Flower collection and yield:
Flowers should be collected by cutting them with scissors or blades. Flowers should be picked early in the morning. Flowers can be harvested within 35-40 days of planting. On average, each plant bears 15-40 flowers depending on the variety.
