In every human endeavor perseverance is essential if one wants to reach the goal. The maxim that "only practice brings you closer to perfection" is as true for bonsai as it is for music.

No one can hope to become a skilled bonsaist simply by growing a tree: it takes years of experimentation with a great variety of plants. Many abandon the challenge too easily at their first failure. It's a real shame, due to insufficient knowledge of the simplest notions.

The tree could have been in poor condition already at the time of purchase, something that the buyer certainly could not have known: if only the aspiring bonsaist had been prepared to try again, he would certainly have achieved success. This is why perseverance is so important if you want to master the art of bonsai. However, perseverance alone is not enough. You have to love bonsai: if you don't have a particular relationship with trees you won't be able to develop a keen enough interest in this field.

As with any other pastime, the reasons for the appeal of bonsai are difficult to explain. It may be because trees are beautiful in themselves, that is, they possess an intrinsic beauty; It could be their miniaturization or the patience required to achieve it, but underlying it all is the fact that miniature trees are a real joy to behold. We can see how all bonsai enthusiasts appreciate beauty in general, and therefore also react positively to the beauty of trees.

Beyond perseverance and love for bonsai, there are two requirements to achieve success; a good knowledge of plant physiology and understanding of the fundamental canons of aesthetics. They are both essential: one alone without the other would not lead to any good results.

However, a good knowledge of plant physiology without artistic inspiration does not allow one to become a good bonsaist, just as it is useless to have a good artistic sensitivity if one does not know how plants live. It is also very important to remember that truly beautiful bonsai cannot be created by mechanically applying the principles of technique and aesthetics alone.

The fundamental thing is to have good taste and apply it to the knowledge of how plants grow, what benefits them and what harms them. All this serves to master the art of bonsai.

Some people seem to have the so-called "green thumb", success with plants comes to them spontaneously, very easily. This skill will probably give them a big advantage and allow for rapid progress in the new hobby. On the other hand, gardening skill can also be developed.

There are some principles in cultivation that many already know: for example, they know that trees must always be transplanted during the dormant period (between autumn and spring) and certainly not in full vegetative activity, or that trees need to be bathed and nourished especially in the phase in which they develop new hair.

Making cuttings or layers to prepare a bonsai is no different from preparing cuttings or layers of normal plants: this obviously also applies to grafting, fertilization, pruning and everything else.

Nadie puede aspirar a convertirse en un experto bonsaista simplemente cultivando un árbol: se necesitan años de experimentación con una gran variedad de plantas. Muchos abandonan el desafío con demasiada facilidad ante el primer fracaso. Es una verdadera lástima, debido al conocimiento insuficiente de las nociones más simples.

El árbol podría estar en malas condiciones en el momento de la compra, algo que el comprador ciertamente no podía saber: si el aspirante a bonsaista hubiera estado dispuesto a intentarlo de nuevo, seguramente habría logrado el éxito. Por eso la perseverancia es tan importante si quieres dominar el arte del bonsái. Sin embargo, la perseverancia por sí sola no es suficiente. Hay que amar el bonsái: si no se tiene una relación particular con los árboles no se podrá desarrollar un interés suficiente por este campo.

Como ocurre con cualquier otro pasatiempo, las razones del atractivo del bonsái son difíciles de explicar. Puede ser porque los árboles son bellos en sí mismos, es decir, poseen una belleza intrínseca; Podría ser su miniaturización o la paciencia necesaria para lograrlo, pero detrás de todo está el hecho de que los árboles en miniatura son un verdadero placer para la vista. Sin embargo, un buen conocimiento de la fisiología vegetal sin inspiración artística no permite convertirse en un buen bonsaista, así como de nada sirve tener una buena sensibilidad artística si no se sabe cómo viven las plantas. También es muy importante recordar que no se pueden crear bonsáis verdaderamente bellos aplicando mecánicamente únicamente los principios de la técnica y la estética.

Lo fundamental es tener buen gusto y aplicarlo al conocimiento de cómo crecen las plantas, qué les beneficia y qué les perjudica. Todo ello sirve para dominar el arte del bonsái.

Algunas personas parecen tener el llamado "pulgar verde", el éxito con las plantas les llega de forma espontánea y muy fácil. Esta habilidad probablemente les dará una gran ventaja y les permitirá progresar rápidamente en el nuevo pasatiempo. Por otro lado, también se pueden desarrollar habilidades de jardinería.

Hay algunos principios en el cultivo que muchos ya conocen: por ejemplo, saben que los árboles deben trasplantarse siempre en el periodo de inactividad (entre otoño y primavera) y ciertamente no en plena actividad vegetativa, o que los árboles necesitan ser bañados y nutridos especialmente. en la fase en la que desarrollan nuevo cabello.

Hacer esquejes o acodos para preparar un bonsái no es diferente a preparar esquejes o acodos de plantas normales: esto obviamente también se aplica al injerto, la fertilización, la poda y todo lo demás.
