I finish the weekpresenting you a very good movie released less than four years ago with a very supportive and human plot.

55 steps  is a 2017 film directed by Bille August and starring Hilary Swank in the role of Colette and a surprising Helena Bonham Carter in the role of Eleanor. 

Like all themes that carry an implicit criticism of the healthcare system in contemporary society. it has not had a great promotion despite the fact that it is based on real events.

Nevertheless, the theme faced and discussed beyond the cinematographic environment has allowed in the following years to improve the relationship between mental and physical disability, and the laws on mental disability.

The film was presented at the Toronto International Film Festival (Canada) shortly after its premiere and received very positive reviews.

The final images of the film correspond to the real Eleanor.

Termino la semana presentándoles un muy buena película estrenada hace menos de cuatro años con un argumento muy solidario y humano.

55 pasos es una película de 2017 dirigida por Bille August e interpretada por Hilary Swank en el rol de Colette y una sorprendente Helena Bonham Carter en el rol de Eleanor. 

Como todos los temas que llevan implícita una crítica al sistema sanitario en la sociedad contemporánea. no ha tenido una gran promoción a pesar de que está basada en hechos reales.

No obstante ello el tema afrontado y discutido más alla del ambiente cinematográfico ha permitido en los años sucesivos mejorar la relación de discapacidad mental y física, y las leyes sobre la discapacidad mental.

La película fue presentada en el Festival Internacional de Toronto (Canadá) poco después de su estreno y obtuvo una crítica generalizada muy positiva.

Las imágenes finales de la película corresponden a la verdadera Eleanor.

 

Eleanor has been hospitalized in a psychiatric hospital against her will and receives, as part of her treatment, drugs that have harmful side effects, causing her serious physical and mental consequences.

Despite her repeated refusals to use these drugs, she is forced - against her will - to do so.

At this point, she decides to hire the services of a lawyer, Colette, who specializes in fighting for the civil rights of individuals, in order to file a complaint and, at the same time, a claim against the hospital where she is hospitalized.

What begins as a simple professional-client relationship ends up turning into a strong friendship between the two.

What is presented at the beginning as a simple individual lawsuit soon ends up transforming into what the American system calls a "class action", that is to say, a global lawsuit trying to protect common rights. And that in this case is represented by all the hospital inmates in these conditions.

This assumes dangerous proportions for the healthcare system in general. Not only for the hospital. The patients are unstable, it is true, but fully capable of understanding, which is why the hospital management should respect their will. 

And it does not.

The case is getting bigger, the mass media are becoming aware of it and the judge who, in the first instance, had rejected the appeal, is forced by the circumstances and the evidence to accept it.

The hospital loses the case but appeals to the Supreme Court. And here all the powers and lobbyists of the state come into play.

The film has a tragic denouement and a hope in spite of the negative final decision of the highest judicial body.

The hope that, nevertheless, and in spite of everything, the struggle has not been in vain.

Eleanor ha sido hospitalizada en un hospital psiquiátrico contra su voluntad y recibe, como parte del tratamiento, medicamentos que tienen efectos secundarios nocivos, causándole graves consecuencias físicas y mentales.

No obstante sus reiteradas negativas a hacer uso de estos medicamentos es obligada -contra su voluntad- a hacerlo.

A esta altura de las circunstancias decide de contratar los servicios de una abogada, Colette especializada en la lucha por los derechos civiles de las personas, con el fin de presentar una denuncia y, a la vez, un reclamo contra el hospital en el que está internada.

Lo que inicia como una simple relación profesional-cliente termina tranfsormándose en una fuerte amistad entre ambas.

Lo que se presenta al inicio como una simple acción judicial individual termina pronto transformándose en lo que el sistema americano llama una "class action", es decir una acción judicial global tratando de amparar derechos comunes. Y que en este caso está representada por todos los internados del hospital en estas condiciones.

Lo cuál asume proporciones peligrosas para el sistema sanitario en general. No solo para el hospital. Los enfermos son inestables, es cierto, pero totalmente capaces de entender, por lo cuál la dirección del hospital debería respetar su voluntad. Y no lo hace.

La causa se va agrandando, van tomando conocimiento los mass media y el juez que, en primera instancia, había rechazado la apelación se ve obligado por las circunstancias y prubeas a aceptarla.

El hospital pierde la causa pero se apela a la corte suprema. Y aquí entran en juego todos los poderes y lobbistas del estado.

La película tiene un desenlace trágico y una esperanza a pesar del fallo definitivo negativo del máximo organismo judicial.

La esperanza que, no obstante, y a pesar de todo, la lucha no ha sido en vano.

Although the criticism seems to be half-hearted, it is evident that in the background there is an underlying attitude of denunciation - albeit a little mild - towards the hospital structures that are often more concerned with providing drugs to hospitalized people to keep them calm and under control, than with investigating the true causes of the disease.

On the other hand, it is evident that certain medications have counterproductive side effects and it is on this point where the plot of the film is centered.

On the one hand the lack of understanding towards the mentally ill (with varying degrees of severity) and on the other hand the implicit criticism of a pharmaceutical industry that produces drugs useful for certain diagnoses but toptally inadequate in other cases with serious side effects.

Si bien la crítica parece quedarse a medio camino, es evidente que en fondo subyace una actitud de denuncia -aunque si un poco leve-hacia las estructuras hospitalarias que muchas veces se preocupan más por suministrar medicamentos a las personas hospitalizadas para tenerlas tranquilas y bajo control, que a indagar sobre las verdaderas causas de la enfermedad.

Por otro lado es evidente que ciertos medicamentos tienen efectos secundarios contraproducentes y es en este punto donde se centra la trama de la película.

Por un lado la desaprensión hacia los enfermos mentales (con diversos niveles de gravedad) y por otro lado la crítica implícita hacia una industria farmacéutica que produce medicamentos útiles para ciertas diagnosis pero toptalmente inadecuados en otros casos con graves consecuencias secundarias.
