Bribery and Corruption Can Never Help Build Any Country

The words _**" Bribe"**_ and _**Corrupt**_ from the Oxford Advanced Learners Dictionary 7th Edition are explained as;
> _BRIBE_ : is _**a sum of money or something valuable that you give to or offer to somebody to persuade them to help you, especially by doing something dishonest.**_
>_CORRUPT_ : is _**willing to use one's power to do dishonest or illegal things in returns for money or to get an advantage.**_
In Africa and especially in my country Ghana, bribery has been a great thorn in the flesh of my country. The country has suffered a lot in the hands of corrupt public personals and other corrupt civil servants. A country like Ghana is a country which is blessed with every good things any country in this world would ever have in other to progress as a nation. Ghana has gold, timber, cocoa, oil, bauxite and some other minerals of which I do not know of.
The above is a little about my own country. Consider your own country as an African, and come out with some reasons why your country is not progressing and you will come to realise that bribery and corruption is playing a major role in collapsing your country.
Causes of Bribery and Corruption
I keep asking myself why is bribery and corruption spreading more faster in the African continents. This is a few things I have seen among most African countries.
¶ **High Cost Of Living** ( Economic Hardship)
Over the years the cost of living in most African countries has increased rapidly. Some people engage in Bribery and corruption in other to survive. The prices of items are increasing steadily whiles the monthly salary of workers are still the same with no or little increment. This is making some people have no choice but to engage in bribery and corruption.
¶ **Unemployment** ( Lack of jobs in many African countries)
Lack of jobs in many African countries has also increased the rate of bribery and corruption in many countries in Africa. One may decide knowingly and ignorantly to engage in acts that may corrupt him or her. For an example one may be given an amount of money to do something he or she knows is dishonest but because he or she has no job that person will do that which is illegal in order to have the money at hand.
¶ **Greed and the wish to have more in life**
Many people engage in bribery and corruption due to their selfish desire and their wish to be more rich in life. Some people are only interested in their selfish desires and how to make rich overnight.
_**Some other reasons why people practice bribery and corruption are**_
•• _Pressure from friends and family_
•• _Low motivation at work place_
•• _Low wages and salaries_
Effects of Bribery and Corruption on a Nation
*Here are some effects of bribery and corruption on a nation;*
¶ **Bribery and corruption slows down development of a country**
¶ **Bribery and corruption also leads to the employment of unqualified personals in the public and private sectors, there by increasing low productivity in the nation at large.**
¶ **Bribery and corruption may lead to lack of efficiency and poor working
progress.**
¶ **Bribery and corruption may create unfavourable working atmosphere.**
>These are the little effects I can lay down here even though there are a hundred and one negative effects of bribery and corruption on a nation.
### Let look at some ways to minimize the rapid spread of bribery and corruption in Africa.
The following are some ways of minimizing the spread of bribery and corruption in Africa;
¶ **One way to minimize bribery and corruption in Africa is by publicly exposing corrupt officials who are caught in the art of diverting public funds into their personal pockets through bribery and corruption.**
¶ **Bribery and corruption can be reduced in a nation when the governments of that country ensures that there is always improvement in the economic standards of that country. This can be done by the government through creating more job avenues for the citizens of that nation.**
¶ **Also religious leaders should be able to preach against bribery and corruption in their various religious groups. This will help discourage people who practice bribery and corruption if they come to know it is against their religious norms**
¶ **The state and private production and business sectors should be audited on regular basis. This will help to discourage people from engaging in bribery and corruption**
