Limitations are imposed on a person by various factors and forces. Some of the factors can be the tradition and culture of the people. It could also be nature or one's level of education, wayward or unbelieving attitude or character. Other factors worthy of note are the type and volume of information at ones reach and the company one keeps.
Some of these factors are within the confines of the individual while others are not. The life we live is structured in such a way that every problem is solvable. But inadequate information, materials and other resources often become the delimitation. In our text above, the Disciples of Christ manifested an embarrassing incompetence in dealing with a demonic patient. Jesus was disappointed as he described them as "perverse and unbelieving generation."
Jesus pinned the problems of these failing disciples on the "two words" he used, namely "perverse and unbelieving." The duo can cause problem anywhere andanytime. Perverseness is a deliberate and stubborn unruliness and resistance to guidance or discipline. While unbelieving or faithlessness is the doubting about the truth of something, the disbelief in any claims of ultimate knowledge. It is any claims of ultimate knowledge. It is the fundamental principle behind every miraculous healing. Jesus berated the disciples for faithlessness and enjoined them to add on prayer and fasting.
Peter counseled that the divine power of God has given every elect whatever is needed in this life and piety. He advised that for etftctive and successful results, one should add to his faith, the following virtue: knowledge, self-control, patience, godliness, kindness and love (2 Peter 1:3-8). If these things are ever increasing in us, we will be effective and productive in our divine assignments and daily living. It should be inferred from Christ's words and everyday experience that the major causes of failure is faithlessness and deliberate resistance to guidance from the Holy Spirit.
The major causes of failure in our spiritual mandate are faithlessness and resistance to Holy Spirit's guidance.
