BRIEF EMPHASIS ON CHRONIC LIVER DISEASE AND HOW TO MANAGE IT EFFECTIVELY

alend

Chronic Liver Disease is a progressive regeneration of liver function for more than six (6) months leading to inflammation, destruction, and regeneration of liver parenchyma.

It can includes liver cirrhosis, portal hypertension, hepatitis, and alcoholic liver disease.

"Chronic liver failure, also called end-stage liver disease, progresses over months, years, or decades. Most often, chronic liver failure is the result of cirrhosis, a condition in which scar tissue replaces healthy liver tissue until the liver cannot function adequately. Patients with abnormal liver function who develop ascites, variceal hemorrhage, hepatic encephalopathy, or renal impairment are considered to have end-stage liver disease (ESLD)."Source

EPIDEMIOLOGY
Chronic liver disease affect more than 800 million people worldwide annually and also account for two million death worldwide.

 CAUSES AND RISK FACTORS

1- Toxins: this causes hepatitis and it includes hepatitis A, B, C, D, and E toxins in which some are contracted through body fluids or blood.

2- Alcoholic abuse: this causes alcoholic liver disease

3- Infections: the invasion of infection can lead to inflammation and scaring of liver.

4- Autoimmune disorder: this is when the body recognizes liver as a foreign body then it tends to fight it.

5- Genetic disorder: there can be mutation in the genetic combination thereby leading to chronic liver disease.

6- Metabolic disorders: e.g. Wilson disease that causes copper to be deposited in the liver.

6- Ripening agents: most food, fruits and vegetables gotten from outside can be a risk factor due to the ripening agents/ chemicals used as fertilizers.

7- Chemical from car fumes, burning refuse, etc. can also be a risk factors for this condition
Spoilt tomato or pepper: this yield substance known as aflatoxins which can lead to hepatitis disease.

8- Other foods that contains aflatoxins are groundnut, tree nut, maize, rice figs and other dried food. They turns to yield aflatoxins if not properly planted and harvested.

 SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

These are the four major stages of chronic liver diseases in sequential order

Hepatitis.
Fibrosis.
Cirrhosis.
Liver failure.

"Some other causes of liver disease might also begin with more acute symptoms or have occasional episodes of acute symptoms. Early symptoms of liver disease tend to be vague. They might include:

Upper abdominal pain
Nausea or loss of appetite
Fatigue and malaise (feeling generally tired and ill)."Source

1- Fatigue
2- Loss of appetite
3- Nausea
4- Diarrhea
5- Yellowish discoloration of eye
6- Enlarged abdomen
7- Edema
 8-Muscle loss.

MANAGEMENT AND PREVENTION

Eating healthy diet.

Cooking food properly.
