Brazil dominates the Copa Libertadores in the last decade: what is left for the rest?

hubeyma

The organization of the tournaments of the neighboring country, with 8 titles out of the last 12 in dispute, the change of the institutions that went from being clubs to Public Limited Companies and with it the management of finances, underpin the supremacy with other countries.

The dominance of Brazilian soccer in South America at the club level is not accidental. It is the southern cone country with the greatest economic investment in soccer in recent years and that translates into victories. Of the last five editions of the Copa Libertadores de América, four have been for a Brazilian club. And this year will be too.

Delving into all the details of why Brazil dominates South American soccer is difficult in just a few paragraphs. What we can say is that the organization also helps and playing a state tournament a year, plus the Brazil Cup and one of 20 teams all against all, is differential, something that does not happen in other tournaments in South America.

The economic power is unquestionable. To give an example, Flamengo pocketed 15 million euros after winning the Brazilian Cup a few weeks ago , something that no country in South America or many in Europe can compete with.

Brazilian teams can repatriate figures at a time of optimal form and even keep their best youngsters . Players like Danilo, De Paula, Scarpa from Palmeiras, Gabigol, Pedro, Bruno Henrique, David Luiz and De Arrascaeta from Flamengo, Arana or Zaracho from Mineiro and many more are examples of the great power of the Brasileirao.

The Copa Libertadores, Brazilian territory.

In recent years, only the Argentine teams could face the Brazilians. River and Boca played the 2018 final, but both the 2017 final and the last three were for teams from Brazil.

In addition, the teams from that country dominated the last finals. In 2020 Palmeiras and Santos were finalists, in 2021 it was Palmeiras and Flamengo and in 2022 they repeated the Mengao -which ultimately won the trophy- against Athletico Paranaense.

Brazil is the great dominator of the last six years. The trend is clear, but in the previous decade the dominance was turning. It is true that from 2010 to 2013 there were four different Brazilian champions, but the finals were always against foreign teams.

Argentina dominates the historic.

Despite these numbers, in the historical set the dominators are Argentines. Independiente and Boca with seven and six titles lead the table, followed by Peñarol with five, River and Estudiantes with four trophies.

The Brazilian teams, for their part, dominate the number of different teams in having won at least one cup. In this list we have Atlético Mineiro, Corinthians and Vasco with a gimp. Athletico Paranaense wants to join this select group.

With two are Flamengo, who can get the third title, Internacional and Cruzeiro. Finally, with three titles, Santos, Gremio, Palmeiras and Sao Paulo. Today will be a big day (again) for Brazil, which will have another Copa Libertadores champion.
