What If? Coronavirus Edition

The Man in the High Castle was an interesting series on Amazon Prime that ran for four seasons. Based on a 1962 novel by Philip K. Dick, it presented what life might have been like in the United States in the 1960s if Germany and Japan had won World War II. I don’t recall the titles or the authors, but I know I have seen books that portray life in some period of time if some major event—like the American Revolution or the Civil War—had not happened.

I’m sure it won’t be long, if it hasn’t been done already, before someone writes a book about what would be going on right now if there had been no coronavirus “pandemic.”

My “What if?” scenario is a little different.

What if it wasn’t necessary to wear face masks?

What if it wasn’t necessary to close movie theatres?

What if it wasn’t necessary to prevent people from visiting loved ones in the hospital?

What if it wasn’t necessary to wear face shields?

What if it wasn’t necessary to practice social distancing?

What if it wasn’t necessary to close gyms?

What if it wasn’t necessary to cancel sporting events?

What if it wasn’t necessary to close beaches?

What if it wasn’t necessary to continually use hand sanitizer?

What if it wasn’t necessary to take a Covid-19 vaccine?

What if it wasn’t necessary to take people’s temperatures before allowing them to enter a building?

What if it wasn’t necessary to close playgrounds?

What if it wasn’t necessary to make people work at home?

What if it wasn’t necessary to close buffets?

What if it wasn’t necessary to install plastic shields in front of cash registers?

What if it wasn’t necessary to prohibit the visiting of loved ones in nursing homes?

What if it wasn’t necessary to limit the number of people at funerals?

What if it wasn’t necessary to close parks?

What if it wasn’t necessary for cities and counties to have curfews?

What if it wasn’t necessary for churches to cancel communion services?

What if it wasn’t necessary to close bars and nightclubs?

What if it wasn’t necessary to decimate the travel industry?

What if it wasn’t necessary to forbid people from taking cruises?

What if it wasn’t necessary to cancel Broadway plays?

What if it wasn’t necessary to isolate the handicapped?

What if it wasn’t necessary to restrict travel?

What if it wasn’t necessary to cancel trick-or-treating?

What if it wasn’t necessary to close zoos?

What if it wasn’t necessary for stores to close dressing rooms?

What if it wasn’t necessary to destroy the economy?

What if it wasn’t necessary for countries to close their borders?

What if it wasn’t necessary to use paper plates and plastic utensils on Thanksgiving and Christmas?

What if it wasn’t necessary to close schools?

What if it wasn’t necessary to take a Covid-19 test?

What if it wasn’t necessary to limit gatherings in people’s homes?

What if it wasn’t necessary to carry out contact tracing?

What if it wasn’t necessary to close “unessential businesses”?

What if it wasn’t necessary for churches to only have streaming services?

What if it wasn’t necessary to binge watch shows on Netflix for weeks on end?

If none of these things were necessary—and it is my contention that none of them were—then governments around the world, from the national down to the local level, are the greatest destroyers of life, liberty, livelihoods, and property that have ever existed. Businesses, organizations, and churches that followed, and continue to follow, government pronouncements about the coronavirus are enablers and enhancers of the destruction of these things.

Since we are talking about “what ifs,” here is a big one for you: What if the federal government announced tomorrow that a deadly Covid-19 virus didn’t actually exist? If the government said that it and the WHO and the CDC made a mistake, and that Covid-19 was really just one unremarkable virus among thousands of viruses that have existed for years, is there anyone who could prove otherwise?
