RETURN YOUR HEART TO
"I hate divorce", says the Lord God of Israel" (Malachi 2:16).
The background to the book of Malachi will help us to understand the text cited. The Jews had returned from captivity by God's providence through King Cyrus of Persia. The Temple and the walls of Jerusalem had been completed courtesy of the good leadership of Zerubbabel, Ezra and Nehemiah. Though the Temple worship and the public reading of the Law had been revived, the lives of the people were inimical to God and to their families.
Malachi condemned the priests and the people for the way they handled their family relationship. Divorce was rampart, marriage with pagan women was celebrated. Lip service to the worship of God was the norm. All these they did without thinking about the consequence of their actions on their children. Personal pleasure was the determinant of their actions. The future of their children was not in their agenda. The prophet called the fathers and mothers to reconsider their ways. There can be no blessing from God if God's people do not make faithfulness to their families a priority. Parents must love their children and prove same by putting the welfare of their children into perspective each time they contemplate new actions.
The General Council theme for 2021 is Back to Bethel. One of the areas to seriously consider as we journey back to Bethel is our behaviour to our family, especially the consequences of our decisions on the future of our children. What will it profit you if you gain the pleasures that accrue from desecrating your marital vows and have your children suffer here and hereafter?
The relationship in our families affects the future of every member of our family especially our children.
